πŸ”₯🏑 Durango Fire & Rescue was proud to join our local partners in sharing important wildfire preparedness and safety information with our community.

Our Community Educator, Johnny, spoke about the importance of smoke detectors, having an evacuation plan, and scheduling a wildfire risk assessment to help homeowners better understand ways to protect their property.

Wildfire Division Chief Nielsen also shared tips on building a β€œgo bag” using the 5 P’s:

🐾 Pets
πŸ’Š Prescriptions

Preparedness starts before an emergency happens, and small steps now can make a big difference later.

πŸ”₯ Fire Academy Week 9 Recap

Monday kicked off with our cadets getting a glimpse into the day-to-day life of the fire service, working through crew-based scenarios and training alongside firefighters throughout the day. They wrapped up the evening with live fire training, putting their skills, communication, and teamwork to the test.

The rest of the week focused heavily on classroom instruction covering technical rescue, extrication, and ropes as they continue building the foundation for more advanced hands-on scenarios ahead.

Every week, this group keeps growing more confident and capable, and it’s been great watching everything start to come together. πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯πŸ‘

πŸš’ From fires and rescues to medical emergencies and public assistance calls, Durango Fire & Rescue crews continue to respond whenever our community needs help most.

Between January and April 2026, DFR responded to 3,221 calls for service across our district and through mutual aid support to neighboring communities.

So far this year, crews have responded to several incidents our community may remember, including the vehicle extrication at the Florida Road roundabout, fires in the Purgatory area, Edgemont, and off Florida Road, along with hundreds of other calls happening quietly behind the scenes each day.

Here’s a look at DFR’s call volume so far in 2026:

πŸš‘ 2,561 Medical Calls (80%)
Including illnesses, cardiac events, breathing problems, injuries, falls, overdoses, behavioral health emergencies, and vehicle accidents.

πŸ”₯ 214 Fire & Hazardous Response Calls (7%)
Including structure fires, outside fires, gas leaks, carbon monoxide incidents, alarms, and hazardous situations.

🀝 426 Public Assistance Calls (13%)

πŸš‘β€οΈ This week, Durango Fire & Rescue proudly recognizes our EMS providers during National EMS Week.

This year’s theme, β€œImproving Outcomes, Together,” reflects the teamwork, compassion, and dedication that EMS professionals bring to every call, every patient, and every moment that matters most.

Whether responding to medical emergencies, supporting patients through difficult moments, or working alongside our healthcare and public safety partners, our EMS crews are committed to providing skilled, compassionate care to our community every single day.

Behind every response is a team of professionals who continue training, adapting, and showing up when people need help most. The work they do often happens during someone’s worst day, but their impact can last a lifetime.

To all EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, nurses, firefighters, hospital staff, and healthcare partners who help improve outcomes together, thank you. πŸ‘πŸš’πŸš‘

πŸš’πŸ”₯ Fire Academy Weeks 7 & 8

The last two weeks have been a big milestone for our cadets.

After completing their written and practical testing, we’re proud to share that our cadets successfully passed their Firefighter I certification and have officially moved on to Firefighter II training! πŸ‘

Training over the past two weeks included multi-company residential scenarios, vehicle and dumpster fire training, VEIS, standpipe/FDC operations, rehab and repack, fire attack coordination, and more advanced incident management and fire ground operations.

As they continue into Firefighter II, cadets are building on their foundation with more classroom instruction, hands-on scenarios, and advanced firefighting skills.

We’re proud of the hard work, long hours, and dedication this group continues to show every week. Keep it up! πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯
