Animas Valley Grange

Animas Valley Grange The grange association was formed in 1867 in response to the need for farmers to have a greater voice regarding agricultural issues. Not all granges are alike.

Collectively, they opposed the high prices railroads charged to bring farm goods to market. Most important is that they influenced the creation of a cabinet level position for agriculture. Today there are granges all over the nation and even the world. The granges not only provide a place for agricultural issues but also social connections for farmers and community. Many events are held at granges

and always have been. Events such as dances, dinners, meetings, and community get-togethers. Here in the Animas Valley there are only a few true farmers and ranchers in the 21st century, those who make their entire living from an agricultural livelihood. The goal of the grange members now is to promote and support the local production of food and locally made goods. Those include farmers, backyard gardeners, small farms, and anyone who practices sustainability in some way. There are many ways to do this but a few can be by growing your own produce, or raising chickens, bees, and other animals, or purchasing from people who do. If you are interested in joining the grange or becoming a supporter please contact us or feel free to come to a meeting. Email: [email protected]
