A big step toward more reliable broadband in Southwest Colorado!

Last week, new fiber network equipment was installed in Durango, Cortez, Empire, and Nucla — creating an important new connection between Durango and Denver.

Why does this matter for La Plata County? Reliability. A single fiber cut can disrupt internet and communications across our region, especially on the east side of the county. This project is about creating another pathway so one cut doesn’t have such a widespread impact.

There’s still work ahead, including connecting this backbone to the Highway 151 project linking Durango, Bayfield, and Pagosa Springs, but this is a major milestone.

This progress has taken years of regional collaboration, including La Plata County, Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, La Plata Electric Association (LPEA), Colorado Department of Transportation, DOLA, Region 10, and other infrastructure partners.

Strong partnerships are building a stronger, more resilient Southwest Colorado.

September is National Preparedness Month. So throughout the month, we are going to share some tips on how you and your family can stay prepared for emergencies.

Tip #1:
Make a plan for your household, including your pets and livestock, so that you and your family know what to do, where to go, and what you will need to protect yourselves during a disaster. Consider the unique risks where you live and the needs of your family. Know where you’ll go if you need to leave your home and learn your evacuation routes so you can get there safely.
Making a plan early helps you reduce stress and save time and money. Follow four easy steps and create a free Family Emergency Plan quickly and easily with our fillable form.
Disasters are costly, but preparing for them doesn’t have to be. Taking time to prepare now can help save you thousands of dollars and give you peace of mind when the next disaster or emergency occurs. Visit www.Ready.gov to see how you can be better prepared without spending a lot of money.
