Kiwanis Club of Durant

The Kiwanis Club of Durant has a rich heritage of service to its community of Durant and Bryan County, Oklahoma.

We are best known for our Annual Kiwanis Pancake Day but we pride ourselves on helping kids locally, nationally, and around the world. The Kiwanis Club of Durant was chartered on November 9, 1949.

Our speaker at last week’s meeting was KLBC Morning Show Host Scott Corbin. He is also a very active member of the Durant Kiwanis Club. He had some very interesting stories on his family’s history in radio and their connection to many country music greats such as Waylon Jennings. Thank you, Scott, for your program and for your community service inside and outside of the Club.

Serving Our Key Club

Members of the Durant Kiwanis Club were happy to lend a hand at the Durant High School Key Club’s Annual Ice Cream Social yesterday!

The Ice Cream Social kicks off the school year and gives students an opportunity to learn more about Key Club and get involved in serving their school and community. Over 100 students attended this year’s event!

The partnership between Durant Kiwanis and the Durant High School Key Club is one we are proud of. When our Key Club needs a helping hand, Kiwanis is always ready to serve! We are grateful for the opportunity to support these outstanding students as they make a difference in our community.

Mike Southard, Choctaw Nation Director of Economic Development, was our speaker last Wednesday. We appreciate the Choctaw Nation for coming alongside of our local communities to help attract and retain new businesses.

Maddie Mueller was recognized as the Kiwanis Bryan County Senior of the Year at this week’s meeting. She was presented her scholarship check for $1,000. Maddie is pictured with Kiwanis President Hudson Toews and Colbert School Superintendent Taylor Matlock. Congratulations Maddie!

Kasey West was recently named the Kiwanis Senior of the Year from Durant High School. She attended yesterday’s meeting to be recognized again and pick up her $1,000 Scholarship check. Kasey is pictured with Kiwanis President Hudson Toews and Past President Angela Pierce. Congratulations Kasey! We will miss your help at Pancake Day this year.

This past weekend, Barbara O’Steen, President-Elect, Kiwanis Club of Durant and Brayden Alberda, Durant Key Club Lieutenant Governor for District 20 & 21, attended the Texas-Oklahoma District Convention in Texarkana, Texas.

It was an inspiring weekend filled with leadership, fellowship, and exciting ideas for the year ahead. So many great things are happening across our district, and we are looking forward to bringing that enthusiasm to Durant and making this an outstanding year for our clubs and community!

Taylor Shipp spoke to the Club on Wednesday about the upcoming Jarid Taylor Memorial 5K and Fun Run. This event will be held on July 25th here in Durant. Proceeds from this run benefit the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office and the Jarid Taylor Heart of a Hero Award. Thank you, Taylor, for visiting to the Club about this great event!

A big thank you to Anthony Echelle with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for being our speaker at the June 17th meeting. Mr. Echelle gave the Club an update on the Roosevelt Bridge and other projects going on in our area.
