Friday is here and we are back with this week's edition of Durham This Week Online!

, conversations around data centers include much debate and consideration. As data centers have expanded across the state and nation, some jurisdictions have enacted temporary moratoria on new or expanded facilities. Earlier this week, the Durham Board of County Commissioners held a public hearing to consider the adoption of a proposed moratorium on the acceptance and processing of applications for new or expanded data centers, with potential exemptions, with Durham County. The Board discussed and approved the moratorium.

Deputy County Manager Maurice Jones is this week's DTWO guest writer. He explains what data centers are and shares what the approval of a data center moratorium means for our community.

Last week, we welcomed more than 600 county officials and staff from 89 counties across North Carolina to Durham County for the 119th Annual North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) Conference.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2026 Civic Excellence in Innovation Awards, which recognize county programs that demonstrate innovative solutions, achieve notable cost and resource savings, and improve services and operations across North Carolina.

We are proud to share that Durham County was one of 11 recipients of the 2026 Civic Excellence in Innovation Awards! Our Information Services & Technology Department was honored for AskAlex, Durham County’s 24/7 virtual “AI” assistant available to all employees. AskAlex was selected for its ability to streamline support, reduce departmental workload, and improve access to information across the organization.

AskAlex serves as a single unified access point for information and services across all county departments. Employees can use the virtual assistant to locate county policies, submit IT tickets, and receive fast, accurate responses. This allows staff who once spent significant time handling routine inquiries to focus on higher‑value work that enhances the way we serve our residents.

It’s Too Cool Tuesdays, and we’re here with another tip to help you stay safe during extreme heat.

, all too often people don’t recognize, or they ignore, the signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke until it’s too late. When the body’s temperature rises to dangerous levels, the consequences can be severe. If this occurs, it’s critical to act quickly to prevent permanent injury or even death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat exhaustion is the body's response to an excessive loss of water and salt, usually through excessive sweating. Heat stroke occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.
