Fatherhood Week, celebrated June 15–21, offers an opportunity for us to honor the fathers and father figures who make a lasting impact on families across Durham County. In this week’s DTWO, County Manager Claudia Hager highlights the loving strength fathers bring to their children’s lives and to our county as a whole. She also spotlights the programs and partnerships throughout Durham County that uplift and support fathers in their essential roles.

Durham County Department of Social Services is hosting a food giveaway next Wednesday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or while supplies last) at the Human Services Building, 414 E. Main St. Staff will also be onsite to share resources and information about Medicaid, the DINE & Double Bucks Nutrition Program, and more. More details below ⬇

June 15–21 is International Men’s Health Week. Durham County Department of Public Health invites everyone to join their monthly community walks with the Men’s Health Council. The next community walk will take place this Saturday, June 20, at Northgate Park (300 W. Club Boulevard, Durham, NC 27704) from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

These walks offer a chance to enjoy light exercise, learn helpful health tips, and connect with others in the community. Bring your family and friends for a morning of movement, education, and networking. Door prizes and refreshments will be available.

Open to all, Men’s Health Council Community Walks are held on the third Saturday of each month and feature physical activity, conversation, and a short talk from a local health expert. Walk locations rotate among local parks in partnership with Durham Parks and Recreation.

Join Durham Cooperative Extension for a FREE virtual, hands‑on cooking class on Zoom and learn how to make a delicious and affordable meal from home! Pick up your cooking ingredients from their office, then cook along step‑by‑step during the live class. This session will teach you how to make flavorful pupusas with a wide variety of filling options to match your dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten‑free, dairy‑free, and more.

Free ingredient kits can be picked up at the Extension building at 721 Foster Street on Wednesday, June 17 or Thursday, June 18 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Durham County Library officially kicked off Summer Reading 2026 yesterday, and the fun continues for the next eight weeks! Haven’t grabbed your reading log yet? No problem, you can join anytime between now and August 8.

This year’s theme, “Unearth a Story,” celebrates the joy of discovery through reading. Everyone is invited to participate, from newborns to seniors and every age in between.

Fill out your reading log, then bring it to any Durham County Library location to claim a prize. All completed logs will also be entered for a chance to win the grand prize (while supplies last).

All seven library locations will offer special programs and events throughout the summer, each with its own lineup.

For the past six months, we’ve partnered with City of Durham, NC Government to better understand the causes of violence in our community and identify the strategies that make impact. Now, we’re bringing that work to the community at the Summit on Saving Lives, a hybrid event, on June 24.

We've spent 6 months working with Durham County Government to better understand violence in our community and identify what works best to reduce it. Now, we're convening the Summit on Saving Lives to share what we have learned and to turn that learning into action.

Together with residents, local leaders, and national experts will examine local data, weigh the evidence, and align on a focused set of strategies tailored to Durham's unique challenges and strengths.

The Summit is on June 24, 8:30am-12:15pm and you can join in-person downtown or via the livestream.
