In the past 7 days Duson Police have been busy and Chief Kip Judice reports on several cases resolved by the officers of the DPD.
In addition to 9 young Possums who attended services at St Theresa’s Catholic Church last weekend May 10th after heavy rains forced the momma Possum to find high ground at the Churches steps and were ultimately picked up by Duson Police Officers Larry Isadore and Simon Wolfsen not cuffed or stuffed but delivered to a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitation Specialist in the Maurice area by Assistant Chief James Hodges, the agency has also been solving crimes and arresting a few bad guys.
On Thursday May 14th Officer Simon Wolfsen was dispatched to the 400 block of Toby Mouton Road concerning the theft of 2 handguns, a suspect was identified by the victim and Officer Wolfsen was able to locate the suspect and an arrest was made on Landon Istre 18 years old listed as homeless. Officer Wolfsen was unable to locate the 2 stolen guns.
A door to door search ensued by Sergeant Calvin Francis, Officer Larry Isadore, Assistant Chief Hodges and Chief Kip Judice.
With the help of local residents who were alerted that loaded guns were unrecovered, Duson Police ultimately located both gun on the property of Istre’s godmother.
Police Chief Kip Judice expressed relief and appreciation to the officers and the citizens who assisted. “A loaded gun unsecured is the recipe for disaster if found by a child making an assumption the gun is a toy, finding these guns made a Town safer” Judice said.
The guns are secured in the Evidence Vault pending release back to the victim upon permission from the District Attorney.
While this search was ongoing, Chief Judice learned of a theft of lawn equipment and a trailer from a location located just out of Duson in rural Lafayette Parish, LA, the victim had not yet discovered the theft but Judice was able to track down the stolen equipment and back tracked to identifying the victim. After confirming who the property belonged to Judice turned the investigation over to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputies/Detectives who worked diligently to secure the stolen property and return it to the victim. Judice credited technology upgrades from Crime Fighter’s of Louisiana Crime Cameras and a strong trusting relationship with both the community and the LPSO as keys to the victim having their property returned in just a few hours after it had been stolen. LPSO arrested David Broussard with possessing the stolen property. Shout out to our partners in crime solving.
Chief Judice, AC Hodges and Officer Travis Guilbeau were on scene of the 5th Grade Dance at Duson Elementary last Friday night May 8th to make sure all 5th Graders and School Staff were safe but this was more of a community building effort by these officers with our youth. “These 5th graders made it through the entire school year without any major referrals, and they deserve not only a dance but a safe community to grow up, play, live and learn in, these interactions with our youth build trust and relationships” Judice said.
While these officers are building trust in our youth, Officers Evan Smith, Josh Cormier, Officer Simon Wolfsen, and Sergeant Calvin Francis were making sure that 50 year old local resident Brad Guidry who was wanted for firearm related charges was being arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail. Guidry was located in the 9100 block of Cameron Street on Friday May 8th and upon his arrest for the outstanding warrant drugs were found in Guidry’s wallet. 1.1 grams of Co***ne and 1.7 grams of Methamphetamines were recovered in Guidry’s possession and now will rest in the Duson Police Department Evidence Room until his court date. Guidry was booked on the drug charges and the warrant for weapons charges in the Lafayette Parish Corrections Center.
From saving baby possums, to attending 5th grade dances to recovering stolen property, to arresting those who feel the need to commit crime, the Duson PD is committed to making Duson a safe and fun place to live, work, play, and visit.
Duson Police Chief Judice said “my desire is that our officers continue to serve with passion and compassion for a desrving community and it’s visitors to insure public safety and our recent efforts truly do prove our commitment is ever present and worthy of recognition, I thank my staff and this community for believing in our public safety plan and buying into a safer and more peaceful community”.
