Final Town of Duxbury Post-Storm activities update as of 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 1, 2026

Duxbury has continued to make significant progress in our recovery efforts from the effects of the February 2026 blizzard. The DPW is widening road access, improving sight lines and cleaning out fire hydrants around town and will continue to do so in the days and weeks ahead. Our road condition notification system is still active and available for residents to provide important additional information on those roads in need of further attention. We greatly appreciate your feedback and we encourage you to continue to please contact us using the following email address which sends a message directly to the staff to address those issues:

The teamwork exhibited amongst all of our Town department staff members over the course of the past week has been nothing short of remarkable. I want to recognize and express my sincerest gratitude and deepest appreciation for the extraordinary efforts of our front-line staff in the DPW, the Fire and Police Departments, the Facilities Department, the ROCCC, the School Department all of those rose to the occasion and stood firm to work together to provide incredible mutual support and to our community when it was needed the most. Even in the toughest of times, they worked tirelessly throughout the storm and in the days after to keep our residents safe.

There are so many others to thank for their support and services (and I apologize in advance if I miss thanking any group or individuals):

Our Emergency Management team who met regularly before, during and after the event to ensure we were prepared to manage all of our assets throughout the storm and as a result of that constant communication, we were able to keep everyone informed throughout the storm and in the immediate aftermath;

The National Guard, the MEMA crews and the numerous contractors who provided their services in clearing and moving snow, specifically, Bo and Freeman Boynton of Duxbury Construction and their team; the crew at Northern Construction Service, LLC; Ray Delmonico and his team from NELM Corp. in Rockland; and the team from Dandel Construction, Inc. in Hanson;

The Selectboard, Sen. Patrick O’Connor and Rep. Ken Sweezy who assisted greatly in securing and ensuring that the MEMA assets were delivered when needed;

All of those residents who dropped off home-cooked food (along with hand-drawn thank you notes from the children!);

All of the meals donated by the Bluefish River Tavern for the National Guard and the contractors;

The local businesses who were ready and able to fulfill our requests for food throughout the event – Benchwarmers, Duxbury Pizza, Tsang’s, Brothers Market, Market Basket, Mary Lou’s;

The Duxbury Senior Center (The Center) for being able to make quick transitions from a sub-base of operations for the DPW to a resident warming center on just a moment’s notice;

Everyone at Town Hall who were able to return to work on Friday and keep town government functioning and making sure meetings were re-scheduled, payroll processed and bills paid;

All of our utility contractors, especially Eversource, who provided dedicated staff at our emergency operations center for the duration of the outage (and sent more line restoration crews than any of us could remember) to help with power restoration efforts and delivering their results ahead of schedule;

And our course, a sincere thank you to you - our Duxbury residents. Your patience, resilience, understanding and, most importantly, coming together for each other in a time need was a testament to what means to be a community – particularly, THIS community - even when things weren’t going well. These events can certainly be frightening, overwhelming and frustrating at times but in the end, we were all able to help one another and see each other through a tough time. Thank you all.

With school re-opening tomorrow, we kindly ask that all motorists please be sure to give yourselves extra time in the morning and drive with heightened awareness. Even though the DPW has been working to clear and widen roads and improvement sight distances – and they’ve done an outstanding job under very difficult conditions, snowbanks may still be high some areas limiting visibility at intersections and bus stops.

Please remember, school buses will be back on the roads, children will be walking to bus stops, snow banks may impact sight lines and leaving a bit earlier could prove to be beneficial so you and other motorists don’t feel rushed. If each of us slows down, remains patient and expects the unexpected, we can all make the first day back to school a safe one.

Finally, please know that in the days ahead and as we have done many times in the past, we will evaluate what aspects of our response worked well and what we can improve. We have learned from this experience and will continue to improve upon our responses to make things even better in the future.

Thank you.

Town of Duxbury Post-Storm activities as of 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2026

Duxbury is steadily recovering from the effects Winter Storm Hernando.

Snow clearing crews worked through the night all around town to clear and widen roads and they will be continuing those efforts through the weekend.

The manned operations center at the Steele Building established by the Fire Department and DPW yesterday was a tremendous success. Through their combined efforts in coordinating Town and MEMA resources to focus on the cleanup efforts, we will be concluding the operations at the Steele Building this afternoon.

Now that the restoration efforts are at a more manageable level, the Town’s DPW staff will be active through the weekend to continue clearing and widening access along town roads, clearing parking areas, improving sight lines and cleaning out the over 1,000 fire hydrants around town.

As has been mentioned in prior updates, since establishing our road condition notification, we have received numerous messages from residents providing important additional information on roads in need of further attention as a result of the blizzard. We greatly appreciate your feedback and we encourage you to continue to please contact us using the following email address which sends a message directly to the staff to address those issues:

We know that there are many areas still in need of clean up and the DPW will be addressing all of those aspects in the days and weeks ahead.

Thank you again for your continued patience.

Town of Duxbury Post-Storm activities as of 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2026

This morning the Fire Department and DPW established and manned an operations center at the Steele Building which will be active through the weekend to coordinate and assist the cleanup efforts of both Town and MEMA personnel.

Through this combined effort, we will continue to clear and widen access along town roads, clear parking areas, improve sight lines and cleaning out the over 1,000 fire hydrants around town. Thankfully, it appears that the weekend daytime temperatures will be working in our favor in terms of melting the snow from the roadways.

Since establishing our road condition notification system less than 24 hours ago, we have received well over 100 messages from residents providing important additional information on roads in need of further attention as a result of the blizzard. We greatly appreciate your feedback and we encourage you to continue to please contact us using the following email address which sends a message directly to the staff to address those issues:

The Transfer Station has been cleared out, re-opened and will be open through the weekend with normal operating hours (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).

With the restoration of power by Eversource and the warner temperatures, the warming shelter at the Senior Center has been closed and all of the normal programs at The Center will resume on Monday, March 2nd.

Our emergency operations team will be working through the weekend resolving any outstanding issues.

As we’ve noted before, the Town deeply appreciates everyone's patience through this process as we all work toward a return to normal - Thank you all!

Please note - all non-emergency Town facilities (i.e., Duxbury Town offices, the Duxbury Senior Center, the Percey Walker Pool, the Duxbury Free Library and Duxbury Beach) will be closed and all meetings will be cancelled on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. These facilities may also be closed, and meetings cancelled, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, however, the decision on further closures and cancellations on Wednesday will be rendered later once we have had time to assess the situation.

About the Project

MassDOT is providing safety and operational improvements to the Route 3 north and southbound bridges (Pilgrim Highway) over Franklin Street in Duxbury.
