"I shall never forget that beach...one dead soldier in particular who caught my eye. I wonder about him. What were his plans never to be fulfilled, what fate brought him to that spot at that moment? Who was waiting for him at home?"

On Friday morning, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Samuelson stopped to help a broken down motorist on the side of State Road 2. The person inside that car, 22-year-old Sharod Grafton from Chicago, asked to be brought to Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City. After dropping Grafton off, criminality that occurred earlier in the day lead to Deputy Samuelson approaching Grafton as a suspect. Grafton then shot Deputy Samuelson three times. While many of us enjoy a three day weekend, Deputy Samuelson is fighting for his life after doing his job to help someone he believed to be in need.

With only three days of school left after the holiday weekend, we yet again are pridefully sharing a LC post of our very own Officer VanDenburgh. He’s done a great job this year and will be returning to the patrol ranks this summer.

Dyer Police Department SRO Vandenburgh made sure students were going the speed limit during Protsman Kindy 500.
