Dyer Fire Department is committed to continuous improvement, professional development, and bringing the highest level of service to our community. This past weekend, we were proud to have four of our personnel attend the Chop Shop RX Auto Extrication Training hosted by the Da Region FOOLS and Crown Point Fire Department.

This hands-on training focuses on advanced vehicle rescue and extrication techniques, giving our firefighters the opportunity to sharpen critical skills, learn from some of the best in the fire service, and prepare for the challenges they may face on the roadway.

At Dyer FD, we believe education and training never stop. Investing in our members means investing in the safety and well-being of the residents we serve. We are proud of our firefighters for their dedication to learning, growth, and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the fireground.

Train hard. Set the standard. Serve with excellence.

Dyer FD responded to a serious emergency this morning near the new South Shore Line station…

10 ducklings somehow managed to miss the platform completely and took a direct route into a storm drain instead.

Good news: every duckling was safely rescued and reunited with mom.

Bad news: they officially missed the train.

Annual Town of Dyer Tabletop Disaster Exercise

Today, Dyer FD facilitated the annual Town of Dyer tabletop disaster exercise, focusing on a simulated tornado striking our community. While the scenario is fictional, the preparation behind it is very real.

Tabletop exercises like this bring together emergency management, fire, police, public works, and local leadership to walk through a coordinated response step-by-step. These discussions help identify strengths, expose gaps, and improve decision-making before a real emergency ever happens.

A tornado impacting our town would require fast, unified action, clear communication, rapid resource deployment, effective sheltering, and coordinated recovery efforts. Exercises like this ensure our Emergency Operations Plan is not just a document on a shelf, but a working, practiced system that everyone understands and can execute under pressure.

Preparedness is built long before a disaster strikes. By training together in a controlled setting, we strengthen our ability to protect lives, support recovery, and keep our community resilient when it matters most.

Today, Dyer FD teamed up with Mr. Welch and the students at Kahler Middle School for their Egg Drop Challenge! The students designed and built their own “highly engineered” contraptions while we provided the important part, dropping them from 105 FEET in the air from a tower ladder.

Some eggs flew like NASA prototypes.
Some eggs flew like lawn darts.
And some… well… made immediate contact with gravity.

The creativity from the students was awesome, and we loved helping put their designs to the test from over 10 stories up! Huge thanks to Mr. Welch and all the students for letting us be part of such a fun day.

The Dyer Fire Department is currently conducting its annual SCBA air consumption training, the DPAT (Dyer Physical Abilities Test). These critical evolutions ensure our firefighters are prepared for the physical and mental demands of the fireground.

SCBA air management is a life safety skill helping firefighters understand their personal air use under stress so they can operate more safely and effectively in high-risk environments.

The DPAT reinforces real-world firefighting tasks such as hose advances, victim rescue, and equipment handling, ensuring our members stay mission-ready year-round.

This past Friday night was a powerful reminder of what 24-hour staffing at our firehouse means for our community.

The Dyer Fire Department, alongside our automatic aid partners, responded to a working structure fire. From dispatch to arrival of the first due fire engine on scene — just 3 minutes and 48 seconds.

Upon arrival, the fire was already threatening to extend into additional areas of the home. Because crews were on shift and ready to respond immediately, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished before more significant damage occurred.

While this incident was less than a mile from the firehouse, the outcome is no coincidence. It highlights the real impact that having firefighters in the station 24 hours a day has on protecting lives and conserving property.

This level of service doesn’t happen on its own.

It takes commitment, planning, and strong support, and we are grateful for the continued partnership with our Town Council, Town Manager, Safety Board, and Clerk-Treasurer’s Office. Moving forward together is what allows us to deliver the level of service our residents expect and deserve.

As Dyer continues to grow, so does the demand for service. Continuing to build on this progress ensures we are ready, every minute of every day, when our community needs us most.

Because when seconds matter, being staffed matters.

During Women’s History Month, our department marked a historic moment as Lindsay and Ari staffed our first ever all-female engine.

Both are highly respected in the fire service, and this moment reflects the professionalism and standard they bring to the job every day.

It also serves as a reminder of the strength of our team and the direction we continue to move—forward, together.

At tonight’s Town of Dyer Board of Safety Meeting, the Dyer Fire Department proudly presented the Civilian Award in recognition of commendable actions that exemplify the rich tradition of friendly neighbors and community partnership that define the Town of Dyer.

On February 20, 2026, the Dyer Fire Department was dispatched to the area of US 30 and Pleasant Springs Lane for the report of a gas leak inside a daycare facility. Following a significant wind event, the roof sustained damage that caused a ruptured natural gas line connected to the rooftop HVAC units. The building quickly began to fill with natural gas, creating an extremely dangerous and potentially catastrophic situation.

Without hesitation, Dyer resident and daycare employee Heather Russell immediately recognized the seriousness of the emergency. Remaining calm and composed under pressure, she called 911 and swiftly initiated a full evacuation of the building. Through her leadership and clear thinking, she safely evacuated seven fellow employees and the thirty-four children in their care, ensuring they were removed from a rapidly escalating hazard.

At the same time, the team at Smits Funeral Home demonstrated extraordinary community spirit. Without hesitation, they opened their doors to provide immediate shelter and a safe haven for all forty-two evacuees. Their compassion and willingness to assist during a critical moment reflect the very best of our town, neighbors stepping forward to support one another when it matters most.

Because of Heather Russell’s decisive actions and the generosity and responsiveness of Smits Funeral Home, what could have developed into a major tragedy was prevented. Together, they ensured the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of dozens of children and staff members during a time of uncertainty.

This incident is a powerful reminder that public safety is strengthened not only by emergency responders, but by courageous citizens and community partners who embody selflessness, leadership, and care for others. The actions taken on February 20, 2026, reflect the character and unity that make Dyer a remarkable community.

The Dyer Fire Department is honored to present the Civilian Award to Heather Russell and Smits Funeral Home for their outstanding actions, unwavering community spirit, and commitment to protecting the lives of others.

Please join us in congratulating Firefighter Tyler Marick on successfully passing his National Registry EMT exam! This is a significant professional achievement that reflects Tyler’s dedication to learning, improving his skills, and serving our community at the highest level.

Emergency medical calls make up the majority of the service we provide to our residents, and having highly trained Firefighter/EMT-B and Ps on our team is critical to delivering the best possible care when people need us most. Tyler’s accomplishment is another example of the continued commitment within our department to raise the bar in training, professionalism, and service delivery.
