September will be here before we know it, and the Dyer County Fair is bringing nearly a week of rides, entertainment, events, live music, and so much more!! I don't know about you, but that sounds like a lot of reasons to get out and enjoy Dyer County. ๐Ÿคฉ

๐ŸŽจ Happy 136th Birthday to West Tennessee legend Noah Lewis! ๐ŸŽ‚ Born on Sept 3, 1890, his song "The Minglewood Blues" put our region on the global music map.๐ŸŽถ Next time you're in , take a moment to admire the Minglewood Muralโ€”painted by Tennessee high school art teacher Whitney Herringtonโ€”which honors Lewis's incredible legacy.

This artwork tells the story of a bustling logging town in Dyersbsurg, TN, a master musician, and a song that traveled from the Obion River all the way to global rock stages.

๐Ÿชต What Was Menglewood?
In the early 1900s, dense hardwood forests covered the land west of Dyersburg. The Louisville-based Mengel Box Company built a massive band mill near the Obion River to harvest timber, and a self-contained boomtown quickly formed in the middle of the woods, taking the name Menglewood (later spelled Minglewood). At its peak, it featured:

A Complete Town Center: Homes, two schools, churches, a doctorโ€™s office, a hotel, a movie theater, and a company store.

Weekend Juke Joints: After grueling weeks in the woods and sawmills, workers gathered at two local juke joints to relax with drinks, dancing, and live music.

๐ŸŽถ The Legend of Noah Lewis
Noah Lewis frequented Menglewood on weekends to play in those local juke joints. Famous across West Tennessee for his unbelievable talentโ€”including the ability to play two harmonicas at once (one with his mouth, one with his nose!)โ€”Lewis wrote "The Minglewood Blues" based on his time entertaining the town's millworkers.

โšก From Dyersburg Juke Joints to Grateful Dead & Bob Dylan

1928: Noah Lewis recorded "Minglewood Blues" as a member of Gus Cannon and the Jug Stompers on Victor Records, later re-recording it as "The New Minglewood Blues".

1967: An up-and-coming San Francisco rock group called The Grateful Dead discovered Lewis's original recordings while researching 1920s Delta blues. They reworked the track as "New, New Minglewood Blues" for their debut self-titled album and played it live for over 30 years!

Global Impact: Over the decades, legends like Bob Dylan and musicians worldwide have covered the song, keeping Noah Lewis's masterpiece alive.

Though the townsite of Menglewood is now quiet farmland, its rich timber and musical heritage live forever right here on our downtown walls.

There are some people who become so deeply woven into the story of a place that it is difficult to imagine that place without them.

Dolly Parton was one of those people.

One thing I have always found so special about Dolly is her understanding that our stateโ€™s greatest treasures arenโ€™t simply places to visitโ€”they are the people, stories, music, generosity, and sense of welcome that make Tennessee feel like home.

Her impact on our state is immeasurable. She changed music. She changed lives through her philanthropy. She created opportunities for so many and helped generations discover not only the beauty of Tennessee, but also just how powerful Southern hospitality could be.

It feels especially poignant to see Dolly on the cover of the 2026 Tennessee Vacation Guide. We are proud to be among the Tennessee destinations represented within its pagesโ€”and even prouder to see one of our state's greatest ambassadors on its cover.

Dolly gave Tennessee so much. And in doing so, she gave millions of people a reason to fall in love with our state.

Her music will remain. Her generosity will remain. Her legacy will remain.

And Tennessee will always be a little more Tennessee because Dolly Parton was here.

The Dyer County Parks, Recreation & Tourism Departmentโ€”along with the Dyersburg/Dyer County Chamber of Commerce as the Designated Marketing Organizationโ€”is laying out a bold vision for our community's future.

This plan goes far beyond basic green space. We are focusing heavily on so many things: sports tourism, live music, and many quality-of-life developments designed to draw both day-trippers and overnight visitors to Dyer County for years to come.
