Today is about honoring those who have fallen....given the ultimate sacrifice...death in service to our great nation. If you remember, a year ago today we talked about the history and purpose of Memorial Day. Today I want to share an inspiring personal story of someone I know. Often times many believe those who are part of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program have it easy but I am here to tell you that while they get a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete and live their dreams, they also know and understand what it meant to raise their right hand and swear to defend the Constitution freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion.

The picture you see below is Dana Lyons and David Lyons. Capt David Lyons died Dec. 27 when enemy forces attacked his convoy in Afghanistan. He was deployed in support of Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan, performing a Combat Advisory mission with Afghan National Army Commandos. His wife, Capt Dana Lyons, was deployed also. They were able to spend Christmas together but never imagined it would be their last Christmas.

Dana was able to es**rt David home and showed the world what it means to be resilient. While talented and decorated with many accolades such as placing in the Olympics trials and multiple MWC awards, that isn’t what they want to be known for. These warriors were patriots, humble, and fearless leaders.

I invite you all to watch the following video as the Air Force honors Capt David Lyons by commemorating his legacy.

Air and space superiority are not birthrights like the force. We’ve earned it the hard way, and we are not going to give it up without a fight.
