Wildlife Wednesday! 🪹🌿
Common Loons aren't exactly known for their interior decorating skills—they build simple nests right along the water's edge, often on small islands, floating vegetation, or protected shorelines where they can easily slip into the water.
That unforgettable "whoooo-ooo" call can echo across the lake for miles—it's basically the official soundtrack of a Northwoods summer. ☀️
If you're lucky enough to spot a loon nest, the best thing you can do is admire it from afar. Giving nesting loons plenty of space helps keep both the parents and chicks safe.

This little critter may not be quite as cute as Jimothy the raccoon, but we still think it's a pretty cool sight!
Our Forest Administrator spotted this white squirrel in the Vilas County Forest earlier this month. While true albino squirrels—with pink or red eyes—are incredibly rare (about 1 in 100,000), this one is more likely leucistic. Leucism causes animals to have white or pale fur while still keeping their normal dark-colored eyes.
Whether albino or leucistic, sightings like this are uncommon and serve as a great reminder that you never know what you'll discover while exploring!

One of our forestry staff recently crossed paths with this adorable raccoon kit while out working in the forest. After stopping to say a quick hello, the curious little one scampered off to catch up with its mom and sibling as they disappeared into the trees.
As tempting as it is to get a closer look, remember that the best way to enjoy wildlife is from a respectful distance. Baby animals are rarely abandoned, and their parents are usually nearby keeping a watchful eye.
Moments like these are a great reminder of the incredible wildlife that calls the Vilas County Forest home! 🦝🌲
