County Land Conservation Committees were created through state law and are administered through Chapter 92 of the Wisconsin State Statutes. Seedling Sales are LIVE on our website!
Today's species spotlight features the White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)!
When we teach tree ID as part of our SOLE curriculum, cedars are one of the easiest trees for students to learn how to ID. Their fan-like needles are so distinct that it puts them at the top of the dichotomous key!
To the Anishinaabe people this tree was known as Giizhikaandag. Due to its buoyancy and rot resistant nature, it was often used to add in making the frame for birchbark canoes.

Seedling Sales are LIVE on our website!
Today on our Species Spotlight, we're featuring the White Spruce (Picea glauca)!
Tree ID might be a SOLE class here on our campus- learning to identify trees with a dichotomous key- but we also incorporate basic ID into many of our field experiences.
Here's a little Tree ID for you!
Did you know that not all conifer trees are pines? Most people just say "pine tree" when looking at our local conifers, but there are actually many types of trees with needles! At TFT we teach our students "firs are flat and friendly, spruces are square and spikey, and pine trees have ponytails". This means that spruce trees have single needles, not in a bundle, and if you take one from a branch you can roll it between your fingers due to it's square structure. Spruce tree needles are also much sharper than fir needles earning them the title "spikey"
