The Wisconsin DNR, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, Friday, May 15, 2026 from noon to 9 p.m. for the following 11 counties:

Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, Vilas and Washburn

A Red Flag Warning is issued when a variety of weather factors come together to create especially dangerous wildland fire conditions. Warm temperatures, very low humidity, gusty winds and exceptionally dry fuels from lack of precipitation in the region are forecast and can result in catastrophic fires.

Recent rains have not minimized wildfire concerns, as grasses, pine needles and leaf litter can dry out again very quickly between precipitation events, creating hazardous conditions.

In addition to the Red Flag Warning, all DNR-issued burn permits for debris piles and broadcast burning are suspended in 26 counties, with additional suspensions possible throughout the weekend. The DNR has responded to nearly 500 wildfires thus far in 2026, with 45% of those caused by debris burning.

The DNR is asking the public to be especially careful with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildland fire and check any fires from recent days to make sure they have been properly extinguished.
Campfires, ashes from fireplaces, outdoor grills, smoking, chainsaws, off-road vehicles or other small engines with hot exhaust systems have the potential to throw a spark, ignite a fire and spread quickly. Please use extreme caution until conditions improve.

The DNR is at full staffing and preparedness across the state to respond to any incidents.

Good Morning! Today starts the beginning of the 2026 Farmer's Market season! We are trying something a little different this year to help with traffic flow, the 500 and 600 blocks of Michigan Street will be one way (northbound only) during the farmers market on Wednesdays and Sundays to hopefully help with congestion and allow everyone to re-enter Highway 45 at the Mill Street signal light. The Eagle River Police Department is excited to announce that we have joined the Police Lights of Christmas and will be sending a squad down for the ride!

On March 10th Eagle River City Council voted to put up a new stop sign at Silver Lake Rd. and Sheridan St. That sign was installed yesterday and applies to all west bound traffic on Silver Lake Rd.

City of Eagle River Declares Preemptive State of Emergency Due to National Weather Service Alert for Heavy Snowfall and Strong Winds

The City of Eagle River, Vilas County, Wisconsin, out of an abundance of caution, has declared a preemptive State of Emergency, effective immediately, in response to the National Weather Service alert for a snow event with heavy snowfall and strong winds forecast to begin March 14 and end March 16.

Residents and visitors are strongly urged to stay off all City streets tonight and throughout the event period, unless travel is absolutely necessary. The anticipated conditions will create significant safety risks and require uninterrupted access for snowplows, sanding operations, and emergency response vehicles.

Limiting travel will:
1. Allow snowplows and sanding crews to safely address heavy snow accumulation and drifting conditions
2. Reduce the risk of crashes, stranded vehicles, and injuries
3. Improve the efficiency and speed of snow removal operations
4. Ensure emergency services can respond without delay

City crews will be working to manage snow, drifting, and reduced visibility as the storm progresses. Unnecessary travel during this period places both motorists and City personnel at risk and significantly slows cleanup efforts.

The City of Eagle River appreciates the cooperation and patience of residents, businesses, and visitors as crews will work to restore safe travel conditions as quickly as possible. Updates will be provided through official City communication channels as conditions improve and normal travel can safely resume.

Happy New Year! At the end of this month the Eagle River Police Department will be hosting a 3 day nationally recognized crisis intervention training. January 30th with wrap up the training with a one day Law Enforcement Chaplains course. The class is free under the LEMHWA Grant but pre-registration is required.
