Its a family affair in Botetourt

Yesterday and today, members from our Company, Troutville Volunteer Fire Department, and Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department have been taking runs at Fincastle Volunteer Fire Department so they may mourn the passing of Charter Member Sam Sprinkle. Members covered calls and helped honor the procession as they entered the Godwin Cemetery in the Town of Fincastle

At 1848hrs Engine 5, Botetourt Medic 5, the Deputy Chief and Troutville Wagon 2 (On a cover assignment at Station 4 as the 2nd due Engine) responded in the first due for a report of a residential gas leak on Prices Bluff Rd. It was stated that a lightning strike occured followed by an odor of gas and smoke in the residence. Units arrived to find an area under a porch that had been burned by an ignited leak in the residential gas plumming. Gas was controlled, the small amount of fire contained, and the home was ventilated with no further hazard. Although the storm is believed to be a factor in the incident, its fortunate that the rain had saturated the porch and aided in keeping the fire spread to a minimum. The run was handled with Engine and Medic 5.

✔️ Although an act of weather was at hand for this incident, always ensure your private gas equipment is up to date and properly maintained to help mitigate potential hazards to you and your home.

Yesterday evening, while the Engine and Attack were operating on a motor vehicle collison with injuries, the Companies Special Operations Members responded into Company 4s district as part of a Special Operations and Tactics Team activation for multiple reports of people trapped by flash flooding.

Brush 5, Car 5, and the Boat Unit responded with our Swift Water Rescue and Support Members. Personnel worked with other units and assisted with logistics and rescue operations until released by Command.

⛈️ Always remember to monitor water levels if you live near creeks or rivers during rapidly developing rain and consider relocating to safer ground.

🚫 Never drive through flood water. Even if it appears shallow. It only takes inches to push a motor vehicle off the road. The road may also be comprised beneath the surface. Always turn around, dont drown.

Today, Sirens and Salutes, Inc invited Family and Department members to the resting place of Firefighter Roger Johns who lost his life in the line of duty on May 19th, 2017 to present a surprise gift.

This gifted stone, presented by Bill Price, is a thoughtful gesture that will continue to stand by Rogers grave and Marine Corps Medallion as a token of Rogers memory which is kept well alive. This meaningful act not only holds weight with Rogers family, but the whole firehouse.

We thank you for this gift and will keep it standing proud with Roger.

Units from 5, 6, and 4 have just cleared from the 1400 of Sinking Creek Rd for reports of a controlled burn that had gotten away. Initial reports included a threatened structure that prompted Dispatch to tone a Structure Fire. Medic 5 arrived first, fording three creek crossings and traveling partially on foot due to poor road conditions to find an acre of wildland on fire with no structures threatened. Brush 5 arrived after and Deputy Chief 5 took Command who scaled the assignment back from structural to wildland. Units operated for roughly and hour and a half on scene extinguishing the fire and overhauling the land.

We urge citizens to check weather conditions, including relative humidity, and think about that when deciding to burn even if it during the allowed time after 4pm.
