97 WILDFIRES BURN IN MOORE COUNTY SINCE JANUARY 1ST

** Almost 169 Acres Burn In Moore County In 97 Wildfires Over 92 Days This Year **

We spoke with NC Forest Service County Ranger Brandon Bibey today about the current Statewide Burn Ban that is in place, as well as the volume of calls seen by the Forest Service here in 2026.

So far as of January 1st of this year NC Forest Service units have responded to 198 calls with 97 reported wildfires that have burned almost 169 acres here in Moore County.

There is a Statewide Burn Ban still in effect as well as a local burn ban by the County Fire Marshal's Office.

According the Mr Bibey he said that he does believe the Burn Ban has helped decrease the number of fires that they have had to respond to recently.

Residents are reminded that in addition to not burning additional measures such as safely discarding smoking materials, to paying extra attention when operating equipment outside including lawn mowers.

We will follow up again with the County Ranger's office following the end of the Burn Ban here with updated call numbers for them.

Be safe out there Moore County.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.
