🐸 The Breaststroke Kick: Where the Power Comes From

The breaststroke kick is the engine of the stroke.
In this drill, swimmers keep their arms extended in front and use a light scull while performing 3 whip kicks with their head down, followed by a breath.

Why?

It takes the arms out of the equation and puts the focus where it belongs: the kick.
This drill teaches swimmers to maintain proper body position and balance while developing a powerful, efficient whip kick.

The mechanics matter:

Heels up.
Toes out.
Kick around, not straight back.
Snap the legs together.
Finish long and streamlined.

A good breaststroke kick doesn’t just move water backward. It creates a powerful surge forward while allowing the swimmer to return to a streamlined position with minimal resistance.
In fact, one great whip kick can carry a swimmer a surprising distance all by itself.
The arms and timing aren’t there to replace the kick. They’re there to support it.

The pull sets up the body.
The breath keeps the rhythm.
The recovery gets you back into position.

But the kick?

That’s where the horsepower lives. 🐸
Master the kick, and you don’t just improve your breaststroke.
You unlock the stroke.

🐬 Your Fastest Swimming Might Happen Before Your First Stroke

A great streamline does more than look good off the wall.

It makes you efficient.

A tight streamline = less resistance.
A strong dolphin kick = more momentum.
Controlled breathing = greater efficiency.

USA Swimming allows swimmers in freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly to remain completely submerged for up to 15 meters (16.4 yards) after the start and each turn. The head must break the surface by that point.

But remember: 15 meters isn’t the goal. Efficiency is.
If your streamline falls apart at 7 meters, staying underwater longer isn’t making you faster. If your dolphin kick is weak or your body position creates drag, you’re giving that momentum right back.

That’s why we practice it.

Push off fast.
Lock in the streamline.
Kick with purpose.
Stay controlled.
Carry your speed.
Then break the surface ready to swim.

Your streamline isn’t just a transition between the wall and your stroke.
It’s the first part of your stroke. Treat it like it matters. 🌊

🏁 Don’t Swim To the Wall. Swim Through It.

The finish is part of the race not the end of it!
In this drill, our swimmers are starting at the flags and attacking the wall with one goal:

Finish strong.

That means keeping the head down, maintaining proper body position, minimizing resistance, and carrying speed all the way into the touch.
No looking for the wall.
No lifting the head.
No slowing down.
And definitely no gliding into the finish.

Attack the wall. 🧱💥

A strong finish starts with trusting your stroke and holding your form all the way through the touch. The goal isn’t to simply reach the wall. It’s to arrive with power, speed, and control.
Because sometimes the difference between a great swim and a great race comes down to the final few yards.

Keep your head down.
Keep your body tight.
Keep your stroke strong.
Finish like you mean it.

🏊‍♂️💨 Don’t glide into the wall. Attack it.
