Members of the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office wore pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support those affected by breast cancer and raise awareness of the importance of research, routine screenings, and early detection.

I’m pleased to share that my resolution, HR 581, advanced from the PA House Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee yesterday by a vote of 26-0. My resolution would recognize January 24-30, 2027, as Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week in Pennsylvania to honor the important, sensitive and professional work they do.

This specialized workforce is responsible for investigating cases of unexpected, unexplained, sudden, violent, and suspicious death. Often these events are traumatic, emotional and physically demanding. However, medicolegal death investigation professionals remain compassionate and comprehensive to ensure that victims and families receive dignity, respect and justice.

We truly appreciate the work that all our medicolegal death investigations professionals do here in PA. I’d like to personally thank our own Montgomery County Coroner’s Office and Dr. Janine Darby for her advocacy and support of this resolution, ensuring that “last responders” are recognized.

The resolution will now move to the PA House floor for consideration.

A shared understanding of our roles strengthens collaboration. 

Yesterday’s Collaborative Death Investigations lecture at the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office highlighted our office’s responsibilities and law enforcement’s role in the investigative process.

Topics included best practices within various types of investigations, evidence preservation and the care and communication involved in making death notifications.

Thank you to our speakers for sharing their perspectives and our attendees for their continued dedication to advancing the field of death investigation.

These opportunities to learn together strengthen our partnerships and our service to families and the community.

On October 15, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office honors the memory of babies lost during pregnancy or infancy and recognizes the grief carried by families and loved ones.

This loss is too often grieved in silence. Listening, acknowledging the loss, and offering continued support can help families feel less alone.

Grief is not something to “get over,” and every family deserves compassion as they navigate life after loss.

Those who wish to participate in the Wave of Light are invited to light a candle at 7 p.m. local time on October 15 in remembrance and support. 🕯️
