Last week, seventeen members of our Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Team adapted their scheduled radio tower climbing session due to inclement weather. Rather than canceling, the team utilized the indoor tower prop at our Special Operations Substation in Fort Washington.

Members spent the night rotating through three skill stations designed to support rescuer operations during a high-angle rescue. First, members practiced fixed ladder ascending, horizontal movement, and descending by climbing the tower’s structural steel while ensuring 100% tie-off. Second, they ascended a suspended cave ladder and transferred to a static line for a rappel. Finally, members focused on techniques for ascending a fixed rope and transferring to a rappel.

The stations were designed to enhance rescuer mobility, which is essential during operations. Our US&R members train rigorously year-round to remain response-ready. While rescue-at-height incidents are rare, they require a specialized skill set and equipment that our team is proud to maintain.

Last week, we took delivery of the final unit in a series of three new vehicles for Montgomery County’s regional police tactical teams. The trucks were purchased using federal Homeland Security Grant Program funds and will be deployed to and operated by the municipal police departments that participate in the regional teams.

On Wednesday, June 10th, we officially turned this vehicle over to the eastern team. The western team received theirs in 2023, followed by the central team in 2025. The vehicles, Ford F-550s outfitted by LDV, Inc., are capable of transporting both personnel and equipment, and can serve as command posts once on scene.

Representatives from Montgomery County SWAT – Eastern Region were on hand at the Public Safety Training Campus to check out the new truck and pick up a set of keys. We’re happy to be able to provide these resources for our municipal partners.

In late May, 15 members of our Urban Search and Rescue Team completed their final instructor-led class for our new water search program, which utilizes advanced sonar systems. This equipment can scan an acre of water in just 45 seconds to identify a human body based on size, shape, density, and roughness. While this is incredible technology to support our water specialists, our core values remain rooted in the expertise of trained professionals and proven rescue tactics.

We recognize that sonar systems can still be affected by water conditions such as silt, sediment, and air, as well as environmental factors like underwater vegetation. Our training emphasizes how specialists evaluate these variables to develop comprehensive search plans that integrate both conventional methods and new technologies. We look forward to continued training to ensure we can accurately interpret data and locate missing individuals when called upon.

Thank you to Springfield Township Parks and Recreation, the Spring Mill Fire Company No.1 Dive Team, and the Copper Collar Group, LLC for supporting our training!

Note: at times, PFDs (personal floatation devices) were removed in a controlled environment with a rescue plan in place to make scenarios as realistic as possible.
