Last week, we shared the different ways you can report an electrical outage. Today, we're looking at the top five (in no particular order) reasons that outages occur in the first place!

Lloyd here. How do you know when it’s time to replace your AC unit? Well, the first indicator you’re likely to notice is a decline in performance. You might note a new racket coming from the unit or a less-than-pleasant odor, too. If you suspect it might be about to kick the bucket, check your air filter first and then consult a professional. To help extend the life of your unit, adjust your thermostat (78 degrees is often cited as the magic number – but definitely try to keep things no cooler than 20 degrees below outdoor temperatures). Also, consider giving your AC unit a break to extend its life and avoid freezing up. Stay cool, neighbors.

Beginning the first week in June, our team will use CCTV cameras to look for damage in the sewer lines along Main Street. We will also clean the lines and remove any obstructions. Lane closures and delays may impact your travel schedule. Work will primarily be completed during the evening hours and business and all activities should continue as usual. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

We enjoyed being part of the inaugural Water Summit this week. Along with our partners at Save Our Saluda, we were able to share how our integrated relationship is enabling better, longer term conservation efforts. Watch this video for more information from ECU’s Operations Engineer Tyler Morgan and our Watershed Manager Melanie Ruhlman!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Lloyd here. To clarify, the electrical outage many of us experienced on Tuesday morning was the result of wildlife interference. Specifically, a squirrel. It happens more often than you’d think and more often than the folks at ECU would like. In fact, if you look at their 2025 data, animal interference was second only to downed trees as the leading cause of customer outages. Now, that fact alone is not enough to get me to move to Australia or Antarctica (they don’t have native squirrels), but it pretty near blew my mind!

Our resident Chaos Coordinator Ginnye Lusk shared, "My favorite thing about working with ECU is that the organization is built on integrity and I've always been proud to work here. And, I have some of the most amazing friendships that never would have happened had I been anywhere else.” As so many of our employees would tell you, to know Ginnye is to have a friend.
