Welcome to Madison County, IL

06/26/2026

Chief Stahlhut was my EMT instructor when I first got into the fire service, the company officer of the second due engine the first time I was first due to a fire as a career firefighter, and most recently my counterpart across town.

Despite the joking and "sibling rivalry" type nature of our two towns, Wood River and East Alton are inextricably linked and the best example of this is with our public safety departments. It would be hard to imagine how we could function without each other's help.

On behalf of the people of East Alton and the EAFD, thank you for your years of service and dedication, not just to Wood River, but to this entire community!

Please join us in congratulating Firefighter Michael Compton on his graduation from the Illinois Fire Service Institute’s Basic Operations Firefighter / Advanced Technician Firefighter program in Marion this afternoon! FF Compton joined our department in December, and began the program in January.

FF Compton has sacrificed his time every other weekend for the last 20 weeks, traveling to Marion to complete his practical weekends, while studying through each week, working a full-time job, raising a family, and responding to calls with our department.

We would also like to give a huge thanks to the City of Benton Fire Department for allowing FF Compton to stay at their station during practical weekends!

FF Compton will attend a couple more weekends for some specialized training to finish up his certification with the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall.

Congratulations Firefighter Compton!

đźš’ HELP US TRAIN! đźš’

The East Alton Fire Department is looking for homes and properties within the community where we can conduct hose deployment training exercises. We will only be stretching hose lines dry — NO water will be flowed and there will be no damage to property. We will not need to enter your home. The goal of these drills is to practice deploying hose and positioning it properly at various points where we would consider making entry in the event of an actual fire.

We are especially looking for properties with unique challenges such as:
• Fences or limited access points
• Walk-out basements
• Rear adresses
• Exterior stair access to second-floor (decks, apartments, etc.)
• Long driveways or setbacks from the street
• Narrow access areas
• Hills, retaining walls, or unusual layouts

This training helps our firefighters improve efficiency, problem-solving, and hose deployment techniques in real-world environments so we can better serve the community during actual emergencies.

Training sessions are short in duration and can be scheduled around your availability.

If you would be willing to allow us to use your yard/property for training, please send us a private message or contact the department at [email protected] .

Include your name, address, and a phone number.

We appreciate the continued support from our community! đźš’

Over the last 8 weeks, firefighters from across Southern Illinois have been hard at work undergoing an intense 8-week training academy at the SWIC Fire Academy.

Today, Probationary Engineer Jacob Mellenthin graduated from the program.

Jacob also serves in the USAF Air National Guard and will be departing this weekend for two weeks for a drill with his unit. Upon his return the hard work will resume as he undergoes field training with our personnel to get him ready to serve the community.

Please join us in congratulating Jacob, and wishing him a long and successful career!
