Over the last 8 weeks, firefighters from across Southern Illinois have been hard at work undergoing an intense 8-week training academy at the SWIC Fire Academy.

Today, Probationary Engineer Jacob Mellenthin graduated from the program.

Jacob also serves in the USAF Air National Guard and will be departing this weekend for two weeks for a drill with his unit. Upon his return the hard work will resume as he undergoes field training with our personnel to get him ready to serve the community.

Please join us in congratulating Jacob, and wishing him a long and successful career!

On Saturday (4/18/26), along with Explorers from all over the region, two Riverbend Fire Explorers and Advisors were able to participate in an Explorer/Cadet Field Training Day. This unique training was hosted by the O'Fallon Fire Department and instructed by the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI). The 8-hour course consisted of evolutions in several key categories including fire hose & streams, ground ladders, search & rescue, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and fire behavior.

At the end of the day, all of the participants were challenged to see who could don their SCBA the fastest, and we're proud to say it came down to the two from East Alton and Wood River! Way to represent!

A great day of fun and learning, thanks to the O'Fallon Fire Department and IFSI.

Yesterday firefighters from Godfrey Fire Protection District, Rosewood Heights Fire Protection District, Roxana Fire Department, and QEM Fire Protection District joined us for a Truck Operations class at QEM burn tower, instructed by IFSI. This class included forcible entry, victim removal, ground ladders, window initiated search, and use of pressurized water extinguishers during search operations.

A big thank you to those who joined, as well as IFSI for instructing, and QEM for allowing us to use their facility for training.
