Our 5th graders took coordinate planes off the paper and onto the floor!
Instead of simply plotting points on a worksheet, students became the coordinates themselves—walking across the plane to locate and identify ordered pairsand practicing how to move along the x-axis and y-axis.
Students also got creative by choosing physical objects around the classroom, placing them on the coordinate plane, and determining their ordered pairs. This hands-on experience helped students connect the abstract concept of coordinates to something they could physically see, touch, and explain.
Through movement, collaboration, and problem-solving, students were strengthening their understanding that every point on a coordinate plane has a precise location represented by an ordered pair (x, y).
Who knew learning coordinates could be this much fun?!
