Lawrence Brook English Language Learners (ELL) have been working hard on learning the folktale "The Little Red Hen" as a culminating activity from our Professional Story Teller ELL Family Night which was funded by an EBEF grant. This folktale originated in England over 200 years ago, and the students were eager to learn about how the story has been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Some students were even able to share traditional folktales they had learned from their families. Teachers Nancy Lombardi and Jenelle Temes created an ELL friendly skit of "The Little Red Hen". The students read the skit, spoke their parts, listened to their peers and wrote some changes into their skits to make it more appropriate to their learner level. Other elementary school ELL teachers around the district have also shared out this fun yet educational lesson with their students. It has been a huge success! The audience participated in the "Hokey Pokey" throughout the skit, and read off of cue cards to actively participate throughout the play. Mrs. Wendy D'Andrea and Mrs. Patricia Colaizzi assisted with props, cards and video. In order to incorporate technology into this lesson, we used the SMARTBOARD and youtube to teach the students how to do the hokey pokey. Surprisingly enough, many of our ELL's had never learned the hokey pokey, so it was a fun learning experience. We also used the iPad to record the performance. The students will watch the video to "self-reflect", and discuss what they will change to make the performance better next time they present it.
