The Minerva Arts Council invites the community to the dedication of a sculpture honoring William Powell Thursday, Nov. 16, 4 p.m., on the grounds of Minerva Public Library.

The sculpture was commissioned by Minerva Arts Council with the cooperation of the Powell family and created by Canton artist Patrick Buckohr.

Powell, a Minerva High School graduate, was a businessman, entrepreneur, veteran, and pioneering golf course owner who designed Clearview Golf Club, the first integrated golf course. He was also the first African American to construct and own a professional golf course in the United States.

Am so grateful that my father, at age 9, discovered and fell in love with the game of golf. My mom was at his side until her death and my older brother, Billy, grew up working on the course.
My father taught our entire family how to play this wonderful game. My younger brother, Larry, followed in daddy's footsteps as the golf course superintendent at Clearview and member of the GCSAA.
I followed daddy's footsteps as a Head Professional at Clearview, and in 1996 added PGA of America Membership to my LPGA Membership.
In 2021, this historic golf course will be celebrating 75 years with special events throughout the entire year. Join us and "Come Alongside Clearview" as we plan many fundraisers to support "America's Course" for the next generations.

My journey to the 72nd PGA Show in Orlando last week began at the Akron-Canton Airport. It was built in 1946 and honored 46 individuals and businesses that are significant to our Stark County area. Clearview Golf Club, which was built in 1946 by my PGA Hall of Fame father William Powell, is among those honored by a tile. This is one of the honorees you see as you go up the escalator.

Was watching national news about a Walmart in Canton, Ohio.
A young man had been taken into an office by a police officer for shoplifting. All of a sudden, he pulled out a gun aimed at the officer
and a staff person quickly jumped him and saved the officers life.
I recognized the staff person as one of our golfers and a Marine.!
Our military are well trained!!!
