Amazing news for one of our young Cardinals!

Ahmyr Henderson, a talented fourth grade artist at Mayfair Elementary School, has been named one of only 30 Streeter Hadley Matthews Grand Award Winners in the first-ever Ohio Juried Exhibition of Student Art (JESA).

This extraordinary achievement distinguishes Henderson’s work from a field of over 8,000 entries produced by students across 52 Ohio counties. The program, which has flourished in Indiana since 1986, expanded to Ohio for the first time this year through the support of the Cynthia P. Matthews Family Foundation.

Henderson will be officially recognized at the JESA Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 2, at the McCoy Center for the Performing Arts in New Albany, Ohio, where more than $18,000 in prizes will be distributed to winning students and schools. Henderson’s winning artwork will be exhibited at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis this fall before embarking on a three-year tour across the state of Ohio.

Congratulations Ahmyr!!!

LIVE NOW! The latest episode of the School Turnaround Podcast hosted by Dr. Chance W. Lewis featuring our very own Dr. Henry Pettiegrew is here!

This episode tells the powerful story of the East Cleveland City Schools’ radical turnaround. The district moved from the bottom of state rankings and a state takeover to becoming a Momentum Award winning, three star rated district. We dive into the legacy of leadership, the importance of replacing sugar-coated data with radical transparency to build community trust, and the decision to let students lead the way in redesigning their own education. By expanding Career and Technical Education programs like drone piloting and film, the district jumped 62 spots in state rankings. This conversation explores how a district found its heartbeat by simply listening to the students and showing them exactly where their learning leads.

Today, we’re proud to spotlight Na’Tasha Webb-Prather, Shaw High School Class of 2007.

Na’Tasha is an attorney whose journey has taken her from East Cleveland to Syracuse University and the University of Georgia College of Law, with study and experiences across Brazil, Spain, France, and England. Her path reflects both excellence and exposure, rooted in where she started.

Her work goes beyond her profession. She is deeply committed to mentoring young people, advocating for mental health, and creating space for others through her initiative, Mosaic Masterpiece, reminding people that even broken pieces can come together to create something powerful.

At Shaw, Na’Tasha was everywhere. From volleyball, track and field, swimming, and softball to Mock Trial, Teen Court, Student Council, Yearbook, and morning announcements, she showed up in every space available to her.

She credits Ms. Urogdy and Mrs. Longino for making a lasting impact, opening doors to opportunities in law, leadership, and personal growth that continue to shape her today.

From SCOPE to Shaw, that foundation built a drive for achievement, exploration, and purpose that still carries. And like she said, there is nothing like the pride that comes with being a Shaw graduate.

This is East Cleveland. This is Shaw. Then. Now. Always.
