🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — HOW IS YOUR FIRE DISTRICT FUNDED? 🔥
Most people know the Fire District responds when there is an emergency. But how are those services actually funded?
The East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District is an independent unit of local government. Its funding supports the personnel, equipment, apparatus, facilities, training, and other resources needed to provide emergency services to the community.
A simple way to think about it is:
Property Taxes + Other Revenue → Fire District Budget → Emergency Services
Fire District revenue can come from several sources, including:
• Property taxes
• Ambulance and service-related fees
• Grants and other outside funding opportunities
• Other legally authorized revenue sources
But not all Fire District expenses are the same.
💰 OPERATING EXPENSES are the recurring costs of providing services every day, such as personnel, training, supplies, utilities, equipment maintenance, and other routine operational needs.
🚒 CAPITAL EXPENSES are generally larger, longer-term investments such as apparatus, major equipment, facilities, and significant repairs or improvements.
📋 DEBT PAYMENTS are another part of the financial picture and may involve obligations from previous major purchases or projects.
🔒 Some revenues may also be restricted for specific purposes, which means they cannot simply be moved from one use to another.
That distinction is important.
Money intended for a major capital project does not automatically solve an ongoing operating expense, just as recurring operating revenue may not be enough to fund a major apparatus or facility purchase.
Understanding these differences helps explain why the District is presenting two separate funding questions in 2026, each intended to address different types of needs.
