FAQ Friday: Did my boat registration cost increase this year? A: Yes. The Aquatic Invasive Species surcharge changed from a flat $10.60 to being based on the length and type of boat starting with the 2026 registrations. FAQ Friday: I live in Grand Forks. Can I renew my car tabs/DL at your office? A: No, we can only do MN licenses. Once you cross the river you are in MN. Yes, Google has us first in their search list but you must go to the correct state.

FAQ Friday: I'm leaving soon for Arizona for the winter, can I renew my car early? A: Yes, you can. You can also renew your Driver's license if it expires in the next 8 months, and even have it mailed to your AZ address! It's much easier than trying to do it from another state.

FAQ Friday: Do I still need to bring in my CDL Medical Card to update my record? A: No. The medical provider will be updating that directly. If you would like to verify your status, go to https://onlineservices.dps.mn.gov/EServices/_/ #7
At the bottom you should see Medical Certificate Status 'VALID' and CDL Medical Certificate Expiration matching the date on your current form. If it's been 48 hours and it isn't updated, contact your medical provider. The Self-Certification form does not need to be submitted unless applying for a card in office.

FAQ Friday: Why do some transactions that should be quick take so long? A: The biggest preventable holdup for motor vehicle is when customers don't have the insurance information filled out on the renewal forms, or have the card readily available. For DLs, it's not having the correct documents when applying for the REAL or Enhanced. The lists are very specific, and all documents must be printed and brought in with you. All name changes from birth must have the corresponding certified court order or certified marriage certificate unless using a current, correct passport book/card as your primary. PLEASE read the list carefully before coming in to avoid multiple trips and aggravation.

FAQ Friday: Do I have a REAL ID? A: If you have a yellow star on the corner of your license or ID, you already have a REAL ID. If you have the star AND a MN flag on your license, and the word "Enhanced" in red at the top, you have an Enhanced license, which also works to fly domestically, and adds the ability to cross the Canada and Mexico border by land or water. Unless you have a name or address change, you do not need to bring documents in again to renew.

FAQ Friday: I have to pay a reinstatement fee for my DL. How do I do that? A: We can take those fees with an added $16 filing fee, payable by cash, cashiers check, or money order. You can also pay that at an exam station, or on the state website https://onlineservices.dps.mn.gov/EServices/_/ #1.

ONLY the documents On The List are acceptable. Hospital bills, credit card offers, etc. are NOT on the list. If your current name is different than on the primary document, bring name change documents for EACH name change.
