This weekend marks SSG Shannon Durango’s final drill with the 110th Public Affairs Detachment before she transfers to the Florida National Guard. We are thankful for her many years of service to the PAD. She has distinguished herself with tenacity and talent, even earning the title of Distinguished Honor Graduate of her Mass Communications Foundations course, setting the standard of excellence of our Rhode Island Public Affairs Soldiers. Florida is incredibly lucky to have her!

Soldiers sharpen their craft in the Mass Communication Foundations course at the Defense Information School, Fort Meade, MD, where storytelling meets soldiering to forge the next generation of military communicators.

We are so thankful for SSG Shannon Durango and proud of all she’s done for the RING! We will miss her dearly as she transfers to the Florida National Guard!

Staff Sgt. Shannon Durango

“It’s definitely sad. I joined the military at 17, and I’ve been with the Rhode Island National Guard the whole time - for 16 years - so it’s sad to leave [IST]. It’s a little scary to move to a new unit where you don’t know anyone. I’ve gotten to know a lot of people in the RING, and I’ve built connections and relationships with people in all different units; I even met my husband in the Army. So, to start with a clean slate so far into my military journey is a little strange. When I started here, I was like a little baby who was molded by the MPs, and then I transferred to the PAD. It was a nice change of pace, and I needed it. When I was in the MPs, I was planning on getting out of the Guard, like that was going to be the end of the road for me, but then I found this avenue to Public Affairs. Being in the unit has given me extra time to think and made me want to stay in for 20 years. I was planning to stay with the PAD. I was gonna keep making trips back up for drill, but then it just got too costly financially. I love this unit, but Gabe and I plan on expanding the family and the thought of flying up nine months pregnant sounds terrible. I’m so grateful for all the people who have helped me along the way, and I’m gonna miss all the friends I’ve made here. Even though I’m a little nervous, I’m also looking forward to starting somewhere new. Maybe I can help a new Soldier out and help teach them about taking photos and videos. It’s gonna be a bit of pressure, and I hope I can just hold up to it.”
