STATEMENT FROM THE EAST HARTFORD BLACK CAUCUS ON TODAY'S UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT RULING ON BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP
“The Fourteenth Amendment, born out of centuries of struggle for emancipation and equality, reflects this core understanding: if the Constitution can be selectively applied to Black people and people of color, we will never have an equal place in our country. For America to be the America we aspire it to be the Constitution must belong to all of us.
The attempt by the Trump Administration to strip a fundamental right, by executive order no less, was always blatantly unconstitutional, and driven by racism. Each and every day, this administration tells on itself with its white supremacist policies. Through its words and deeds, the people currently in charge of the federal government make it clear that they believe the rights and contributions of people of color do not matter in America. Their hatred will be their downfall.
Today’s victory—which to be clear only had the support of five justices for the idea that the Constitution means what it says—is the result of people of all backgrounds organizing and fighting back against this and all the other illegal attempts to strip us of our dignity and rights.
There is more work to do, and we must all recommit ourselves to using every elected office and lever of power to vindicate the rights of our neighbors and of our people."
