The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has announced that, weather permitting, mosquito control spraying will take place on Thursday, September 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The following Fire Island communities are scheduled to be treated:

• Davis Park
• Water Island

Spraying will take place on all streets and boardwalks using Anvil (sumithrin) through an ultra low volume ground spraying method.

Although the likelihood of experiencing health effects is low, Suffolk County recommends that children and pregnant women take precautions to avoid exposure when practical. If possible, remain indoors or avoid the area while spraying is taking place and for a short time afterward.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island in Islandia for their Back-to-School Shopping event, where volunteers helped equip local students with the school supplies they need for a successful year ahead.

Thank you to the incredible staff, volunteers, mentors, and community partners who make programs like this possible. Investing in our young people and ensuring they begin the school year prepared is one of the best investments we can make in our community.

It was wonderful to spend time with everyone and see firsthand the positive impact Big Brothers Big Sisters continues to have on the lives of Long Island’s children. Wishing all of our students a safe, successful, and exciting school year!

Heavy rain is expected across Northwest and Southwest Suffolk County this afternoon into late tonight, with a Flood Watch in effect beginning at 2:00 PM. Localized flash flooding is possible, especially in low-lying areas, poor drainage locations, and roadways. Rainfall totals of 1.5 to 2.5 inches are expected, with isolated areas potentially receiving even more.

On National 811 Day, I’m reminding residents that 811 is the number to call before you dig! Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence, building a deck or taking on a larger project, one free call will have underground utility lines marked before you begin.

Calling 811 at least two business days before digging is required by law and helps prevent dangerous accidents, costly repairs and disruptions to utility service. Don’t assume you’re digging shallow enough to be safe—know what’s below before you dig.

A Heat Advisory is in effect today through 8:00 PM for all of Suffolk County, with heat index values expected to reach around 100°F.

Stay safe by:

- Drinking plenty of water
- Limiting outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day
- Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Never leaving children or pets in a parked vehicle
- Staying in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible
- Checking on elderly neighbors, family, and friends - Knowing the signs of heat-related illness.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency-call 9-1-1 immediately.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services will once again conduct its Oral Rabies Vaccination (ORV) program this September to help protect our communities from the spread of rabies.

Beginning August 31, occurring Monday-Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Department of Health staff will distribute specially designed oral rabies vaccine baits in wooded areas, parks, shrubs, hedges, storm drains, and other locations frequented by raccoons throughout the western towns of Huntington, Babylon, Smithtown, and Islip. These bait packets are not harmful to people or pets and are an important tool in preventing the spread of rabies among wildlife.

Rabies is a serious disease that can be transmitted from infected mammals to humans and other animals. This program helps reduce the presence of terrestrial rabies in our local wildlife and protect public health.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works is planning to carry out mosquito control spraying in portions of Fire Island this week as part of its annual Vector Control Program.

Weather permitting, spraying is scheduled for:
• Wednesday, July 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. – Atlantique/Summer Club
• Thursday, July 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. – Davis Park and Water Island

Ground spraying using an ultra-low volume aerosol application will be conducted on streets and boardwalks throughout these communities.

I was happy to honor Dana Landi-Zhicay, the 10th Legislative District’s participant in the Suffolk County Legislature’s Page Program.

Dana is a 19-year-old student at Suffolk County Community College, where she is majoring in Political Science. Her interest in public service began in high school through Habitat for Humanity, and she hopes to one day work for the United Nations. She is particularly passionate about UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

It was a pleasure recognizing Dana and learning more about her goals for the future. She was a tremendous help in our district office and I wish her continued success as she pursues her education and a career dedicated to serving others!
