Yesterday, I had the pleasure of presenting Angelica Ottomanelli with the inaugural Trish Bergin “Most Improved Runner” Award at St. Joseph’s CYO of Ronkonkoma.

Angelica’s hard work, determination, and growth throughout the season made her a deserving recipient of this special recognition. Congratulations, Angelica, on a job well done!

It was a pleasure to attend the groundbreaking for Helen Keller Services’ new Children’s Learning Center, coming to Islandia in Fall 2026. This specialized preschool will provide critical support and educational opportunities for children with disabilities and complex developmental needs.

I was happy to be joined by Islandia Mayor Dorman as we celebrated this exciting investment in our community and in the future of our children. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this endeavor possible!

The Suffolk County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Project is offering a free legal clinic for veterans.

Veterans can receive assistance with a wide range of legal matters, including veterans benefits, disability issues, powers of attorney, health care proxies, guardianship, divorce, child support, public benefits, taxes, bankruptcy, and more.

The clinic will be held at the Suffolk County Bar Association, located at 560 Wheeler Road in Hauppauge on November 6th. Appointments are required.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works Division of Vector Control has announced plans to conduct mosquito larvae control treatments by helicopter from June 16 through June 18, 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.

The following Town of Islip locations are currently scheduled for treatment:

Scully
Islip Preserve
Quintuck Creek
Heckscher State Park
Pepperidge Hall
West Oak Recreation

The following Town of Islip locations are currently listed as pending and may be added as needed:

Robert Moses Coast Guard Station
Gardiner Park
Admiralty/Isbrandtsen
West Sayville Golf Course

Additional locations within the Town of Islip that are being monitored include:

Clam Pond
Captree
Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge
Timber Point
Idle Hour
Ludlows Creek
Namkee Creek

The treatments will be conducted using a low altitude helicopter applying mosquito control products that target mosquito larvae. If weather conditions prevent completion of the work, treatments will continue on the next suitable day.

A Heat Advisory is in effect today, Thursday, June 11, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with heat index values expected to reach 100°F. High temperatures combined with elevated humidity can quickly create dangerous conditions and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Please take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones:

• Stay hydrated throughout the day
• Use air conditioning when possible or visit a cooling center, library, or shopping mall
• Limit strenuous outdoor activities and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
• Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and family members
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short time

Extreme heat can be especially dangerous for older adults, children, pregnant individuals, those with chronic health conditions, and anyone without reliable access to cooling or hydration.

If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or develops a dangerously high body temperature, call 911 immediately.

As temperatures rise, I encourage everyone to take this advisory seriously and look out for one another. A quick phone call or visit to a vulnerable neighbor or family member can make a significant difference.

Due to the extreme heat forecast for today, Thursday, June 11, Central Islip Schools will be operating on an early dismissal schedule in accordance with New York State regulations and Board of Education policy.

Please be sure to make any necessary arrangements for student pickup and transportation.

The Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management has issued a Heat Advisory for Thursday, June 11th, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with heat index values expected to reach 100 degrees.

High temperatures combined with elevated humidity can increase the risk of heat related illnesses, especially for seniors, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seek air conditioned spaces whenever possible.

If you do not have air conditioning at home, consider visiting a cooling center, library, shopping center, or another air conditioned location. Please also take a moment to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and friends who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, move them to a cool location and call 911 immediately.

Stay safe, stay cool, and continue to monitor local weather updates throughout the week.

Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Brookhaven are offering a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats, and ferrets on Saturday, June 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, 300 Horseblock Road in Bellport. The 12th Annual Day of Wellness for Veterans and Families will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, located at 2 Chet-Swezey Road in Center Moriches.

Hosted by the Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project and the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, this event offers veterans and their families access to wellness resources, support services, and opportunities to connect with others in the veteran community.
