East Lansing Police Department ELPD strives to provide Quality Service, Protection and Safety to the citizens of East Lansing.

ELPD consists of 41 sworn officers, 61 non-sworn personnel including Jail Officers, PACE Officers, Cadets, Crossing Guards and additional Support Staff, two K9-equipped vehicles and three dogs, 13 marked patrol cars, two semi-marked police vehicles, and 10 unmarked vehicles. ELPD officers undergo extensive annual training, including 40 hours of general training. Specialized units also undergo spec

ialty trainings geared more specifically toward their line of work. Specialized units include the Detective Bureau, Background Investigators, Special Response Team, K9 Team, School Resource Officer, Liquor Control Officer, Bike Patrol, Conflict Management/Hostage Negotiation Team, Accident Investigation Team, Crime Scene Investigators, Arson Investigators, Background investigators, Chaplains Committee, Child Safety Seat Technician, Civil Disturbance Unit, Community Emergency Response Team, Community Relations Coalition, Crisis Intervention Team, Emergency Driving Instructors, Use of Force Team, Field Training Officers, Honor Guard, Traffic Unit and Vehicle Maintenance Officers.

ELPD Releases Narrated Video, Redacted Body-Worn Camera and Fleet Footage Related to April 15 Stabbing and Officer-Involved Shooting

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) today released a narrated video, including witness cellphone footage, and body-worn and fleet footage redacted as appropriate under law, related to the stabbing incident and officer-involved shooting that took place on April 15, 2026.



The release comes after ELPD initiated a meeting with the family of Isaiah Kirby on May 7 and then consulted with the Michigan State Police (MSP). ELPD also shared unredacted footage with the family of Isaiah Kirby earlier today.

MSP continues to conduct its investigation into this incident.

Following redactions being made as appropriate under law this week, the narrated video and redacted body-worn and fleet footage is now available on the City of East Lansing website at

The East Lansing Police Department would like to notify the public that someone has been trying to impersonate our City Planning Department online. The scammers are sending FAKE city planning bills using a ".com" email address and claiming to be one of our employees.

As a reminder, NEVER CLICK on any links in suspicious emails!! The City will NEVER ASK FOR A WIRE TRANSFER of money, and we most definitely do not want you to pay with iTunes gift cards or any other gift cards.
