Today we remember one of our own who lost his life in the line of Duty on this day 64 years ago. Firefighter Richard Plumley made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save 3 other lives who also were tragically taken.

At 3:50 AM, the East Liverpool Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Ephraim Street. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions and quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack.

Due to the extent of the fire, second and third alarms were requested, bringing additional East Liverpool firefighters and mutual aid from Liverpool Township Fire Department. Crews successfully brought the fire under control within approximately 25 minutes and remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul and checking for hidden hot spots.

One occupant was transported by NorthStar EMS for evaluation of smoke inhalation. The American Red Cross was requested to assist the displaced residents. Crews also rescued a cat from the home.

The residence sustained significant fire and smoke damage. A total of 17 firefighters operated at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
