At approximately 12:45 this afternoon, we responded to the high school regarding a chemical spill in a chemistry classroom. On arrival, we found approximately 1-1.5 gallons of sulfuric acid spilled on the ground after a bottle was dropped. We activated the State Haz-Mat team for a Tier 1 response (the lowest level). On arrival, the team neutralized the chemicals, and a service was contacted to decontaminate the area and remove existing chemicals. The fire department did transport one person injured during the incident. Due to a half-day, all students were dismissed at the time of the incident. All emergency crews were clear of the scene by 4 PM. School will not be affected on Tuesday.

We would like to thank Massachusetts Department of Fire Services District 4 Haz-Mat Team for their response, as well as the East Longmeadow Police Department and the Longmeadow Fire Department for their assistance.

As grilling season begins, the East Longmeadow Fire Department reminds residents to grill safely:

• Keep grills at least 10 ft from home & decks

• Never leave a grill unattended

• Keep children & pets a safe distance away

• Clean grease buildup regularly

• Check propane connections for leaks

• Keep a hose or fire extinguisher nearby
