Last week, a few of our 4th grade students had a MakerSpace session to learn about why some things sink and others float. This led to a discussion on ship types, including how Pacific Islanders put outriggers on their canoes for stability and how for centuries, people harnessed wind power to travel the oceans. The class built sail boats out of cardboard, cords, straws, popsicle sticks and more, and powered them across the "ocean" with air pumps. We love seeing our students have fun while learning!

This week (December 5-11) is Computer Science Education Week, an annual call to action to inspire students to learn computer science, advocate for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners in the field.

In honor of this week, we want to celebrate our very own Ravenswood "Girls Who Code." Over the last several weeks, several 3rd-5th grade students gathered in the Costano makerspace for the "Girls Who Code" after-school program. Led by the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (), students learned the fundamentals of the Scratch programming language. Congratulations to all the girls who graduated from this program and a big thank you to those who made the program possible!

Classes weren't in session over Thanksgiving week, but that didn't stop our students from learning and having fun! Our intersession programs, supported by Boys And Girls Clubs of The Peninsula, YMCA of Silicon Valley and East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring - EPATT, provided enriching opportunities all week. Ravenswood students had the chance to participate in community service activities, play sports, learn about the environment, and even go on college tours. Thanks to all who helped make this possible!

At Belle Haven Elementary School, creating bookmojis is all the rave! Ravenswood Classroom Partners and Bring Me A Book teamed up to bring new books to all Belle Haven 4th- and 5th-grade students. The children in each of the six classrooms successfully engaged with Bookelicious, created a bookmoji, spent time browsing books, and created a reading wish list from which they chose two books for their home libraries to read and keep. Thank you Bring Me A Book and Bookelicious for partnering with us on this super fun and engaging project!

A week ago today, we gathered as an entire staff: teachers, leaders, paras, custodians, clerical, and everyone in between for professional development. ’s facilitation allowed us to continue to explore the topics of intersectionality, antiracism, code-switching, the model minority, and more.

Antiracist work is challenging, but it is so important to remain informed and connected so that we may continue dismantling white supremacy in our system!

On September 21, the CDE shared the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) letter with county and district superintendents and charter school administrators to warn schools about the dangers of fentanyl, an extremely potent and dangerous synthetic opioid that continues to be a major contributor to drug overdoses in California, including among youth. In addition to these concerning trends, brightly-colored fentanyl (referred to as rainbow fentanyl) has been identified as a new trend according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Rainbow fentanyl can be found in many forms, including pills, powder, and blocks that can resemble sidewalk chalk or candy. Any pill (regardless of its color, shape, or size) that does not come from a health care provider or pharmacist can contain fentanyl and can be deadly. Read more at the CDPH news release.

PANDEMIC RECOVERY: "We are so grateful for the summer enrichment grant from the County of San Mateo! It will let us serve 240 more K-8th grade students at our free, full-day, four-week summer enrichment program for students in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, which is run in partnership between the Ravenswood City School District and the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula.

"We’ll also be able to provide counseling and mental health supports during the summer, which is so important for students who have gone through two years of pandemic-related challenges and trauma.” — Ann Waterman Roy, Ravenswood City School District

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved $3.3 million of federal funds to create the Summer 2022 Enrichment Program to:

➡️ expand access to summer programs for socio-economically disadvantaged and vulnerable students

➡️ support the social-emotional wellbeing of students

➡️ provide learning enrichment activities and counterbalance learning loss attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic
The San Mateo County Office of Education’s (SMCOE) Safe Routes to School program and RCSD have scheduled a walk assessment. Please see attached flyer for the details. It is a community- driven process where we virtually teach community members to use a free phone app (tablets can be provided). They then have a week to take a walk around the school’s neighborhood. They have this opportunity to take and share pictures of safe and unsafe features of the neighborhood and comment on it anonymously. We then bring the participating community members together in a virtual meeting to discuss those concerns, and work together to develop ideas to make the streets safer. We work closely with the cities and multiple partners so we can help support the implementation of those ideas.

Community input is instrumental in making the streets safer.

3/15 – 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm Virtual training on how to use the Our Voice app (simultaneous Spanish translation).

3/16 – 3/24 Take a walk any time around your school. Use Our Voice Discovery Tool app to take pictures and comment anonymously with this question in mind – “What makes it easy or hard to walk and bicycle to school/in this neighborhood?”

4/7 – 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm – Virtual discussion meeting – Stanford team will lead us in a discussion based on the shared information (simultaneous Spanish translation) and guide community members make a list of things they would like to see happen.

A written report with recommendations will follow and we will provide support to implement those changes.

Today, we published a media release on the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) new guidance on masks in TK-12 and childcare settings.

As of March 12, CDPH will shift its guidance to a strong recommendation that students, teachers, and others continue to mask while indoors in school settings. San Mateo County Health has aligned itself with the CDPH guidance and confirmed that once the statewide requirement ends, masks will be strongly recommended in all public and private schools in the county.

Fall activities such as Halloween and Día de los Mu***os can pose a risk of spreading COVID-19.

Use your common sense by following these simple safety steps:
- Get fully vaccinated
- Stay home if you are not feeling well, and if you've been exposed and are not vaccinated
- Wear a face mask
- Keep gatherings small (and outdoors)
- Be cautious when eating
- Take safety precautions when trick-or-treating
- Travel safely

By taking these precautions, schools and families can ensure that fall activities and events are not just fun but also safe for all members of the community!

We're thrilled to welcome students back to Camp Jones Gulch for a memorable week in our Outdoor Education program!

The program transitioned online in spring 2020 and was put on pause during the 2020-21 year as schools focused on bringing students back for in-person learning. This year, the program is back with the same high-quality educational and social experiences as before in addition to new COVID-19 safety measures for students and staff.
