Our Friends of FDL Big Book Sale is only one week away! We decided to take a look back at how our Friends group has evolved over the years. A temporary group formed in 1989 to assist with one of the library's many moves to a new location. In 2006, then-director Amy Falasz-Peterson sought to form a more permanent group as a way to help out with special library events - including a book sale!

Group members may have changed over the years, but the Friends of Fondulac District Library continue to sponsor and assist library programs for all ages and promote the library throughout the community.

Stop by the Big Book Sale Friday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On the November 3rd ballot, District residents will vote on the future of library funding. But do you know how the Library is funded?

As a public resource, the Library is publicly funded. While figures vary a bit year-to-year, about 90% of FDL’s annual operating income regularly comes from property taxes. The remaining 10% is made up of a state-distributed corporate tax, grants, donations, and fees. FDL does not receive monies from sales, gaming, hospitality, income, or other taxes.

To equitably provide access, FDL rarely charges fees beyond minimal cost-recovery fees for services like printing, copying, and faxing, and reimbursement fees related to lost and damaged materials.

The Board designed this ballot measure to result in stable and sufficient funding that will allow the Library to sustain and grow the spaces, collections, and services our community has come to expect and to continue reliably serving East Peoria and adapting to its needs for years to come. Because the proposition effectively serves to reallocate the bond rate to the operational fund, tax bills should not increase due to a passed referendum.

We'll share more here next Monday! In the meantime, you can learn more and get answers to many FAQ at https://fondulaclibrary.org/referendum2026.
