This week's W**d Watch features Golden Bamboo- a plant we've received several questions about recently. While it isn't technically classified as a w**d, its aggressive growth habit can create serious landscape management challenges once established.

Often used as a privacy screen or landscape barrier, Golden Bamboo is a very fast-growing perennial that can reach heights of up to 40 feet. It has jointed cane-like stems, bushy tops, and slender lance-shaped leaves. It's ability to spread through an extensive rhizome system allows it to move well beyond its original planting area, often into adjacent landscapes where it can become difficult to control.

Once established, managing Golden Bamboo typically requires persistent, long-term control efforts.

Last week we talked about Small Crabgrass… now meet its fuzzy cousin: Large Crabgrass!

While both spread in summer lawns, Large Crabgrass is easier to spot because it has hairy leaves and stems, unlike the smoother texture of Small Crabgrass.

Watch for:
• Noticeable hairs on leaves and stems
• Wider blades and sprawling growth
• Seedheads with 3–5 spikes

Like Small Crabgrass, this summer annual loves thin turf and warm temperatures

This weeks w**d is Small Crabgrass, also known as Smooth Crabgrass!

This summer annual germinates in the spring, thrives in hot weather, and dies with frost. For identification, look for
• Light green leaves with smooth edges
• Low-growing, spreading habit
• Seedheads with 3–5 finger-like spikes
