Here is an example of an Ebike-V-Dirt bike before you buy your child one.
E-Bike Bylaws (Electric Bicycles)
• Definition: Must have fully operational pedals.
• Power/Speed: Motor (1 h.p.), top assisted speed 28 mph.
• Access: Allowed on roads, bike lanes, and multi-use trails.
• Requirements: Usually no license, registration, or insurance needed.
• Safety: Helmet requirements depend on local ordinances.
Electric Dirt Bike Bylaws (E-Motos/Pocket Bikes)
• Definition: Generally lack pedals and are throttle-only.
• Power/Speed: Often exceed 28mph
• Access: Prohibited from sidewalks, bike lanes, and most public parks/trails.
• Legality: Often illegal for street use unless fully registered, insured, and outfitted with lights/mirrors as a motorcycle or moped.
• Usage: Typically restricted to private property or designated off-road OHV areas.
Key Takeaways
• The Pedal Rule: If it does not have working pedals, it is not an e-bike, regardless of its speed, according to the Leoguar Electric Bikes guide.
• Lookalike Trap: High-powered, "e-dirt bike" style vehicles with pedals added may still be classified as motorcycles by law enforcement because they exceed 28 mph.
• Consequences: Using an e-dirt bike on a bike path/city streets/highways, etc, can result in fines and vehicle seizure.
They must also obey all traffic laws, stop signs etc.
