Third grade is learning all about the job of Packaging Engineers by creating packing materials to safely ship a Pringle in the mail. Third grade learned about how much movement a package has in order to understand how important it is to create safe packaging for something!

We've become measuring experts in the process - these engineers prepared to complete their work by measuring the shipping box and even the Pringle!

In their small groups, students took on group roles and helped document the process by using the STEAM Lab iPads to take photos of their work. Below you can see the documentation created by our budding engineers and photographers.

Our packaging engineers are looking forward to the day when Mrs. Hogan brings the chips to the Post Office and sends them back to school.

Out of the 32 chips being shipped over 20 miles of Suffolk County, how many do you think will survive?

In Second Grade, Beebots are where it's at!

Second graders have been applying their coding skills and vocabulary to Beebot Coding Maps.

In small groups, second grade took turns programming Beebots to travel across their classrooms and a number of different Coding Maps.

Kindergarten read "Balancing Act" by Ellen Walsh and learned all about a new science tool - pan balance scales!

They had a great time practicing making the scales balanced, tipping them, and balancing them once again!

Fourth and Fifth graders are tackling Fluor's 2022 Ball Run Challenge.

The challenge asks participating teams to create a track for a ping pong ball using only paper and tape.

The object of the challenge is to work AGAINST gravity, and create a track that makes the ball move as SLOWLY as possible.

We are looking forward to testing our first set of tracks and making improvements before our final contest entries!

Do you want to try it at home? Check out all of the details here:

Second Grade is preparing for the Ice Pop challenge.

When the challenge is introduced, second grade will not only be making Ice Pops, but also a device to keep them cold!

After the devices are created, we will test them to see how many milliliters of ice pop melted.

When it's time to measure, our second graders will surely be experts - we practiced measuring liquid volume in small groups during January!

Last week First Grade students read "Be a Maker" by Katey Howe in STEAM. They practiced using the Engineering Design Process by creating a plan for something they wanted to create using coffee filters, straws, pipe cleaners, string, popsicle sticks, cups, glue, and tape.

Each student did a fantastic job carrying out their design and brought their wonderful creations home. They were beaming with pride on their way out of the STEAM Lab!

Check out one of our newest additions to the EQ STEAM Lab!

Meet Dash - one of our newest robots, who is VERY impressed by the projects in our STEAM Lab!

Dash will be used to practice coding and introduce our students to how coding translates to practical applications.

Our sixth-graders have been busy conceptualizing, planning, and building Winter Carnival games from cardboard and other recycled materials.

We're looking forward to playing all of the games when we return from Winter Break!

Second-graders are "flying" into break with the use of the STEAM Lab zip line! After reading Rosie Revere, Engineer, students planned a flying machine for our zip line and then collaborated and combined their designs to build and test in small groups.

We loved watching each of the structures travel down the zip line.

Go Rosie Go!
