India is undertaking an enormous renewable energy project near the Pakistan border that will be the world's largest when completed. The $2.26 billion Khavda Renewable Energy Park will span 726 square kilometers in the harsh Rann of Kutch salt desert environment. Thousands of workers are installing infrastructure across this inhospitable landscape to support 30 gigawatts of solar and wind energy production, enough to power 18 million homes.

https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/india-works-to-build-world-s-largest-renewable-energy-project/7388799.html

Despite the difficult working conditions, India is pushing forward with the project to meet its goals of expanding renewable energy to 10 percent of its electricity from the current heavy reliance on coal. The success of the Khavda facility will be a crucial step for India to reduce its carbon emissions and battle climate change, while also serving as a model for large-scale renewable projects worldwide. Leaders at the COP28 climate summit have called for a tripling of renewable energy globally, making India's efforts especially noteworthy.

Sustainable City and Community Empowerment through the Implementation of Community-Based Monitoring: A Conceptual Approach

https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/12/22/9583

"A sustainable city should promote the active participation of its civil society in urban planning and development of cities as the means to satisfy their needs. However, the absence of an appropriate platform has caused the public to lose interest and neglect the process of planning and development. This article attempts to develop a conceptual framework for sustainable cities and communities’ empowerment through the introduction of community-based monitoring as a means to increase community resilience and well-being. Community-based monitoring is designed to be instrumental in addressing environmental sustainability issues with public participation, where the community champions the environmental monitoring process for the decision making of planning and development of cities. The conceptual framework is expected to serve as an approach in driving the urban community towards attaining a more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable environment."

How Eight Cities Succeeded in Rejuvenating their Urban Land by the World Bank

The World Bank and PPIAF have released a new report highlighting the importance of private sector participation in urban regeneration projects spanning 8 cities including Singapore, Seoul, and Johannesburg. The decaying inner cities are a major issue globally, but can be turned around with well-designed public-private partnerships. The report outlines 4 key phases for successful urban regeneration: scoping, planning, financing, and implementation.

https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2016/07/13/How-eight-cities-succeeded-in-rejuvenating-their-urban-land

The case studies showcase major transformations driven by public-private collaboration. For example, Santiago, Chile used housing subsidies to repopulate its inner city, mobilizing $3 billion in private investment. Johannesburg reversed a 40% property vacancy rate through targeted regeneration initiatives that leveraged $18 million in private funds for every $1 million invested by the city. The report concludes that with the right approach, cities can reverse decay and create sustainable growth.

The 2023 Sustainable Energy in America Factbook by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy tracks energy market and policy trends in the United States

https://bcse.org/market-trends/top-trends/

In 2022, the U.S. saw a record $141 billion investment in clean energy, with the federal government committing $369 billion to advance the transition. The country made significant strides, meeting 62% of electricity demand with natural gas and renewables, but greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1%, emphasizing the need to accelerate clean energy adoption to combat climate change.

Despite energy spending rising in 2022 due to inflation, U.S. households still enjoyed historically low energy costs. However, millions of households face challenges paying energy bills, highlighting the importance of further investment in energy efficiency, particularly in low-income communities. The deployment of digital technologies and competitive power prices contribute to the ongoing energy transition, while reforming regulatory processes is crucial for modernizing and enhancing U.S. energy infrastructure.

The Promise of Geothermal Energy

Thermal energy networks can build grid resilience, provide a stable source of energy, and offer continued employment to utility workers skilled in traditional energy infrastructure.

https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/10/04/1080795/us-thermal-energy-networks/ by Technology Review

Thermal energy networks are expanding in 13 US states to reduce building emissions. These underground systems connect structures to share renewable heating/cooling from geothermal and waste heat sources. With utility and government support, the first projects are already under construction in states like Massachusetts. Thermal networks provide efficient green energy and support gas workers' jobs.

The renewable systems offer efficient heating and cooling by sharing geothermal and waste heat between connected buildings. With initial projects backed by utilities and state governments, thermal networks are poised to play an increasing role in the clean energy transition by cutting emissions. They also create job opportunities for workers from the gas industry.

Spanish energy company Soleolico has unveiled a new wind turbine design with solar panels mounted on rotating blades to generate renewable electricity 24/7.

designboom - www.designboom.com/technology/soleolico-solar-panels-wind-turbine-generate-green-energy-sails-10-09-2023/

Called "Sails", the system uses a patented magnetic calibration to orient the solar panels towards the sun as the blades rotate. Soleolico claims the design can generate up to 25% more power than typical wind turbines.

The company also developed a 3D-printed coating for the turbine using Pure.Tech technology to absorb and convert carbon emissions into clean air. Soleolico says the compact, versatile units can be installed without disrupting soil and even directly into electric towers. The first public display model is installed outside the Palacio de la Magdalena in Santander, Spain, providing a preview of the 24/7 renewable energy concept.

The clean hydrogen market is rapidly expanding, with 100+ startups chasing $280B in subsidies globally.

https://medium.com//scaling-clean-h2-production-474c5a017b9a

Green hydrogen from electrolyzers costs 3-8x more than fossil-based versions today. But plummeting renewable energy and electrolyzer costs can enable competitiveness. Notable players include Electric Hydrogen, building 100MW systems in the US; Verdagy, operating the world's largest anion-exchange electrolyzer; and Monolith, which won a $1B DoE loan.

Overall, VC/PE investment has surged to new records, nearing $3.5B in electrolyzer startups alone. Although challenges remain, the innovations emerging in electrolysis, methane pyrolysis, and more make us optimistic about sector growth.

Electrek.co provides a brief assessment of the current growth trends of renewable energy in 2023.

https://electrek.co/2023/10/04/heres-how-renewables-have-grown-so-far-in-2023/

In the first half of 2023, wind and solar expanded significantly, providing 14.3% of global electricity generation. However, historic droughts severely reduced hydroelectric output in many countries. As a result, fossil fuels filled the gap, flattening global emissions growth from electricity. Despite rapid 16% solar growth globally and new monthly generation records in 50 nations, dramatic drops in hydro generation allowed coal-fired power in China to reach new highs.

Though hydro declines slowed emissions progress, slower electricity demand growth also suppressed emissions in major economies like the EU, US, Japan and South Korea. So while severe drought enabled continued coal reliance in some countries, the steady growth of renewable energy sources coupled with declining energy usage in many major economies suggests ongoing progress in reducing global power sector emissions overall.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers have created a “supercapacitor” made of abundant materials that can store large amounts of energy.

https://news.mit.edu/2023/mit-engineers-create-supercapacitor-ancient-materials-0731

Made of just cement, water, and carbon black, the device could enable inexpensive storage of intermittent renewable energy from solar and wind power, with applications such as home energy storage or wirelessly charging vehicles on roadways.

The key is the carbon black forms wire-like structures within the hardening cement, creating a large surface area to store charge. Tests show cement blocks less than a meter wide could store a household's daily energy needs. The materials are cheap and readily available globally. The technology is scalable by varying the carbon ratio and cement thickness.
