When there’s an emergency, people don’t care if the firefighter responding is full time or part time, so access to state grants should reflect that.

In St. Clair County alone, the majority of fire departments and fire protection districts are volunteer organizations. That's why I sponsored a new law to allow the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal to create and award rehabilitation and construction grants to volunteer fire departments and fire protection districts.

I had a great time at the Bernard Long Elementary School open house. This event featured a festive atmosphere, vendors, and plenty of welcoming and inviting faces from everyone involved. I am proud to announce two libraries in the 57th District will be receiving over $200,000 for literacy program enhancements, workplace skills development and more.

Reading is a wonderful gift. Whether you had a late start or have physical limitations, these grants will go toward spreading that gift to everyone.

In the district, two local organizations are set to receive a total of $204,871, including:

Mindseye Radio – $121,714 to help those with visual or physical limitations, unable to read standard print, or hold or turn pages of reading material.

Southwestern Illinois College – $83,157 to help adults who read below the ninth-grade level or speak English at beginning level to improve their basic reading, writing, math or English language proficiency.

Kudos to Missy ( AgeSmart), William and Leonard( Illinois Securities Department ) and Master Sgt Dye ( Illinois State Police ) on a masterful and impactful presentation.

Last Friday, a bill I carried was signed into law that allows the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to earn interest on idle funds to help offset program expenses and reduce reliance on budget appropriations.

Just like any bank account, it is wise to not let funds sit idly by without purpose. This law allows the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to generate a modest, passive revenue without increasing fees or state taxes. This is a great move for forwarding government responsibility and efficiency.
