Today we join the world in honoring
International Firefighters' Day.
This day was created from the tragedy of December 2, 1998, when five volunteer firefighters: Christopher Evans, Jason Thomas, Matthew Armstrong, Stuart Davidson, and Garry Vredeveldt, lost their lives battling the Linton bushfire in Victoria, Australia. Their courage and sacrifice sparked a global movement to recognize the bravery, unity, and selflessness of firefighters everywhere.

We remember the fallen, support the living, and honor the unwavering spirit of those who run toward danger when others run away.

Safety First

with Shawnee Fire Company conduct bailout drills. Firefighter bailout systems are critical, last-resort personal escape kits designed for emergency egress from burning structures, typically featuring a 50-foot rope, a descent control device and a specialized anchor hook.

In the second option, firefighters exit a window headfirst, securing themselves by hooking an elbow/arm around a rung (typically the 2nd or 3rd) and controlling their descent down the beam or rungs with their feet acting as brakes before turning upright.

This drill instilled confidence in bailout systems and fostered camaraderie among the team. If you're interested in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter visit shawneefire.org!

Families, friends, local leaders, and members of came together for an enjoyable evening at Shawnee Inn last evening.

We acknowledged the dedication, connection, and feeling of purpose that comes from being a volunteer in our community. Members choose to offer their time, participate in regular training, and be present for neighbors in their times of need.

We recognized the support from our families, local leaders, and individual and business supporters who help to ensure members are safe, equipped, and able to respond in emergencies. We appreciate the way local companies work together in mutual aid as situations call for an adequate response to get the job done safely!
