This Friday and Saturday, Captain Stephen Brewster and Lieutenant Tyler McTomany had the opportunity to attend hands-on training hosted by New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) at the FDNY “the ROCK “ Training Center on Randall’s Island.

Friday focused on Engine Operations, while Saturday was dedicated to Truck Operations, providing valuable hands-on experience and reinforcing the skills needed to better serve our community.

Our own Chief of Fire, Paul Haynes, was among the many outstanding instructors who helped deliver the training and share their knowledge and experience.

Thank you to the Village of East Syracuse for investing in our members and allowing them to attend this training opportunity.

On April 18th and 19th, 2026, the East Syracuse Fire Department hosted the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) for an 8-hour regional training course titled “Fire Behavior on the Inside.”

This intensive fire dynamics course featured more than 12 live fire evolutions per day within a mobile training unit. Training began with a live flashover evolution and progressed through several critical disciplines, including:

- Vent, Enter, Search (V.E.S.): Executing entry through windows to isolate a room and search for trapped victims.

- Forcible Entry: Door entry with a partner for two-room searches.

- Search Under Pressure: Search to find fire then utilizing pressurized water extinguishers to maintain fire control during search operations while continuing to searching for victims.

- Search while Advancing a Hoseline: search evolutions conducted while advancing a handline to protect occupants and firefighters.

Throughout these exercises, members operated in pre-flashover conditions while actively monitoring smoke, heat, and air movement. Other stations including thermal imaging camera training inside the container while the evolutions were being performed to observe the temperature and air flow changes affected by opening and closing doors and windows.

We would like to thank the following Fire Departments for attending and participating in this valuable training session.
