✈️🥞 Aircraft, pancakes, local history, and a great community tradition are coming together for one full weekend at the Wurtsmith Air Museum!

The Wurtsmith Air Museum Fly-In & Pancake Breakfast returns Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, at Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast, a former service member, a history buff, or simply looking for something fun to do with the family, this is a great opportunity to experience an important part of Oscoda’s history.

Start your morning with a pancake breakfast served by the Oscoda Rotary from 8:00 to 11:00 AM on both Saturday and Sunday. After breakfast, spend some time exploring the museum, viewing visiting aircraft, and learning more about the history of Wurtsmith Air Force Base and aviation in Northeast Michigan.

The museum will be open from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM both days. Pilots and their guests will receive free museum admission.

I’m really going to miss seeing Darrel at the airport and sharing our Wednesday lunches at the fire hall.

Darrel built this yellow and red Kitfox himself, and he was so proud of the work he put into it. It was a reflection of the kind of person he was—dedicated, hardworking, and someone who took great pride in doing things the right way.

Every now and then, you meet someone who is truly the salt of the earth. Darrel was one of those people. He was a good man, a hard worker, and someone who will be missed by so many of us.

Rest in peace, Darrel. It was a privilege to know you, and I’ll always remember seeing you at the airport and those Wednesday lunches at the fire hall.

I have to say that I’m a little jealous that the Mio airport received a visit during Northern Strike from a Marine V-22 Osprey on Sunday. I was hoping for at least a CH-47, but I was happy to get the Blackhawk in for an exercise.

Last week I received a call from an Army Major with the Illinois National Guard. He was inquiring about using our airport as part of a training exercise for Northern Strike.

He explained that they needed an area away from the runway that would accommodate an emergency landing by a Black Hawk helicopter. As part of the exercise, another helicopter would fly in to pick up the crew, while a mobile ground unit would be dispatched to simulate repairs to the disabled aircraft. The Black Hawk would remain on the field for several hours while the training operation took place.

I told him I would mow an area west of the ramp to accommodate their training mission.

Sure enough, they showed up and left me with a helicopter on the field!

Of course, they could have at least left me an Operator’s Manual. 😂

It’s pretty exciting to see our airport play a small part in a major military training exercise like Northern Strike. It’s another great example of the many ways our airport can serve the community—and beyond.

And yes… the helicopter is still there. 😉

✈️ 3,000 Followers — Thank You! ✈️

The Iosco County Airport page has officially reached 3,000 followers, and I couldn’t let that milestone pass without taking a moment to say thank you.

When I began managing the airport five years ago, I was often surprised to meet people from right here in the area who had no idea Tawas even had an airport.

In fact, the airport terminal didn’t have any signage indicating that it was an airport. Unless you happened to see an airplane sitting on the ramp, a person passing by could easily have no idea what was behind the building.

A lot has changed over the past five years. More people are discovering our airport, following what’s happening here, attending our events, watching the airplanes come and go, and—most importantly—recognizing the important role an airport can play in a community.

So, thank you to all 3,000 of you for taking an interest in our little corner of the aviation world. Your support, enthusiasm and interest mean more than you probably realize.

Hopefully, together, we can continue to keep this little gem on a trajectory that ensures it remains a viable and vibrant part of our community for many years to come.

My neighbor’s kids have been interested in taking a flight. I knew we had to do it before they got busy with their school sports schedule, so tonight was the night.

It was nice of the CH-47 pilots to come on the civilian radio frequency reporting their position while they were transitioning along the lakeshore. They were no factor at 600 feet.

It’s so nice of them to blow off the coyote and turkey manure from the runway. It saves me some time.
