In Washington State, when a child can no longer live with their parents, nearly half end up in the care of a relative or someone the family already knows and trusts. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and close family friends who take in a child often do so quickly, with love, and without a lot of resources in place.
September is National Kinship Care Month, and it's a good time to make sure kinship caregivers in Central Washington know that support is available.
AACCW's Kinship Navigator Program serves kinship families across Adams, Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Lincoln, and Okanogan Counties. The Navigator can help connect families with needed resources and services, and can even accompany caregivers to CPS, Family Court, and school IEP meetings for support. One-time financial grants are also available for qualifying low-income kinship families to help cover food, clothing, school activities, emergency utilities, and more.
