Discussion :
Guidance has become better aligned on the events of the next 36 hours or so. An anomalous upper low will rotate through the region from NW to SE. This is an unusual circumstance and will bring very cool air into the region along with showers and a few embedded thunderstorms tonight and Saturday. The biggest impact will likely be a period of stronger winds which will impact the coastal areas of the region on Saturday morning through the early evening. Although a decent pressure gradient will exist, the big question of how effectively the winds will mix down to the surface is always in play. Southern New England has always had a rough history with “Cool Pools aloft” in the warmer seasons with storms and wind potential.
Much of the recent guidance is showing that the winds aloft at 925mb (2500ft or so) could mix down rather effectively on Saturday. This means that winds over 50mph are possible along the MA coast from NE MA to the Cape/Islands. Winds would start in NE MA and spread down the coast towards the Cape/Islands. NWS has hoisted a wind Advisory for the coastal sections of MA. There is a possibility that it could be expanded further inland. During the winter months, winds in this range are not uncommon, but this is almost June and we are fully leafed out. Winds over 50mph could lead to some scattered power outage potential in spots. Winds should diminish Saturday night as the low pushes further offshore and the gradient lessens with time.
