Three great guys loving the lighthouses!

For those of us who love lighthouses and appreciate their rich heritage, we understand that the history of the lights did not stop when these guardians of the sea were automated. Hardly!

Yes, the everyday happenings at lighthouses did look quite different after the keepers were removed. Yet, despite the major changes, lighthouses continued to shine and guide mariners, Coast Guard lighthouse technicians still kept a good “watch” over the lights, and thereafter, preservationists become very vigilant at restoring and maintaining our nation’s historic light stations.

Everyone who has helped lighthouses in one form or another following automation has a story to tell – a story worth learning, sharing and preserving!

On August 11, 2026, American Lighthouse Foundation board of directors Gary Childs and Jared Fulcher journeyed out to Race Point Light Station on Cape Cod to visit with retired U.S. Coast Guard Machinist Mate Scott Cipperly, who happened to be staying overnight at Race Point with his family.

Scott Cipperly spoke at length with Childs and Fulcher about being stationed at Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Woods Hole, MA, during the late 70's and early 80's, and how he serviced the lighthouses along the Cape and beyond at that time. The visit was fun for all involved. As Jared Fulcher noted, “Scott was very gracious in talking with us about his experiences!”

Thank you, Scott Cipperly, for sharing your Coast Guard lighthouse stories. This era of history was/is important, and deserves to be preserved as part of the overall story for a lighthouse like Race Point!

Nauset Light Preservation Society would like to give a great big THANK YOU and gratitude to The Barley Neck , The Rail, and Polka Dot Panini for their donation of proceeds of sales on August 6th. The monies will be used to maintain Nauset Light and the Nauset Light Keepers House. Our sincerest appreciation to everyone who supported us that day at one of these establishments. We are so grateful for all the support.

Amateur Radio Operators will again be celebrating the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend at Nauset Light on Saturday August 15th and possibly August 16. Every year, over 500 lighthouses and lightships from around 40 countries worldwide go on the air over the ham radio bands, honoring the mission of lighthouses and lightships.

Again, members of the Northern New England Field Amateur Radio Operators will be participating in this annual event. Visitors are welcomed. And if you have a FCC license for amateur radio, you’re welcome to join along.
We hope to be operating from 12 noon to 3 pm.

Lighthouse lovers! Visit our sister lighthouse, Race Point Light, in Provincetown. It's a bit of a (beautiful) hike, and a real treat.

Come visit and climb Race Point Lighthouse this coming Sunday, July 12. Hikers only. Beach closed to ORVs. 2 mile hike eachway. Bring water. No flip-flops or bare feet. Donation of $5 per person. Cash, credit card, or smartphone. No Venmo. Keeper volunteers will be there. Monies go to restoration and maintenance. Enjoy the views. Best access to hike is from Hatches Harbor NPS parking lot and hike out over the fire road to the trail to the Lighthouse tower.
