We had an incredible day hosting Owen Tilby as Easthampton Fire Chief for the day! Owen was joined by his good friend Phaedon Stillwagon who took on the important role of Deputy Fire Chief for the day. The two future Chiefs got inside look at what it takes to serve our community, spend time with our firefighters, check out the apparatus, and experience a little of what it’s like to be part of the Easthampton Fire Department. It was a great day filled with fun learning, and plenty of smiles!

We hope Owen and Phaedon had as much fun as we did. Thank you both for spending the day with us and who knows… we may have just met a couple of future fire chiefs! Thank you, Owen and Phaedon!

Easthampton, MA — August 7, 2026 — The Easthampton Fire Department responded to 412 Main Street (Yankee Hill Machine) for a reported structure fire with reports of employees actively evacuating the building on 8/6/2026 a little after 9 PM.

Engine 1 and Engine 2 were initially dispatched, and an automatic first alarm was activated. Upon arrival, Engine 1 staged at the hydrant while Engine 2 was directed by members of the Easthampton Police Department to an overhead door. Command was established by Captain Dunham, and firefighters were met by an employee who reported that he had been welding when a spark arrester box and filter caught fire.

The employee successfully used a portable fire extinguisher to control the fire and then moved the affected equipment outside on a cart. Firefighters located a second spark arrester box inside the building that was still smoking. The box was removed from the building and placed outside with the first unit.

Firefighters used thermal imaging equipment to evaluate the equipment and surrounding welding area. Initial temperatures of the two affected boxes were measured between approximately 300 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit, while readings in the welding area and remaining spark arrester were very low. Crews used two water cans to extinguish the remaining smoldering material before moving the boxes under an exterior water source for continued cooling.

Firefighters and building personnel utilized multiple large shop fans and positive-pressure ventilation to remove smoke from the building. Following ventilation, firefighters re-evaluated the affected equipment using thermal imaging equipment and confirmed that temperatures had returned to normal and were no longer detectable. The building's fire alarm system was successfully reset.

A small amount of haze remained inside the building. The building owner indicated that he would remain on scene and continue ventilating the facility using the building's larger shop fans.
The incident was contained to the welding-related equipment, and there were no reported significant injuries. Two employees were evaluated for minor smoke inhalation by Northampton Fire Rescue and Southampton Fire Department ambulances.

The Easthampton Fire Department reminds businesses and employees that portable fire extinguishers can be an important first line of defense when a small fire is discovered, but employees should only attempt extinguishment when it is safe to do so and should immediately activate the building's emergency notification and evacuation procedures. This business was well prepared and should be commended for their safety plans and the actions taken by their employees.
