Two incredible people going above and beyond!

On May 18, 2026, at approximately 7:20 AM, a vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, and caught fire with an occupant trapped inside. Before Police & Fire/EMS personnel arrived on scene, Mr. Hebert & Ms. Elander, residents of Strong Street, witnessed the crash and immediately sprang into action. Realizing the danger posed by the rapidly spreading fire, they put their own safety at risk to help a complete stranger.

Mr. Hebert & Ms. Elander broke the vehicle windows to access the trapped occupant and used a garden hose to suppress the advancing fire, preventing it from spreading further in the passenger compartment. Most importantly, they successfully extricated the victim from the burning vehicle and moved them to a place of safety before conditions worsened.

When emergency responders arrived, they found the occupant outside the vehicle and receiving care. Firefighters continued to extinguish the remaining fire, and EMS personnel transported the patient for medical treatment. There is little doubt that Mr. Hebert's and Ms. Elander’s quick thinking, courage, and willingness to act during a life-threatening emergency significantly improved the outcome of this incident. If it were not for their actions, the outcome could have been a lot different.

Acts of heroism often occur without warning and require individuals to make difficult decisions in a matter of seconds. Mr. Hebert and Ms. Elander demonstrated exceptional bravery, compassion, and commitment to helping another person in need. Their actions reflect the very best of our community and serve as an example of the difference individuals can make. Emergency responders are fortunate to have protective equipment and resources that protect them while performing such dangerous tasks. These two individuals helped the occupant safely escape, putting themselves in harm's way, with no protective resources other than a garden hose.

On behalf of the City of Easthampton, the Easthampton Police & Fire Department, and the residents we serve, we extend our sincere gratitude and recognition to Mr. Nick Hebert and Ms. Elander for their heroic actions and outstanding public service.

Easthampton, MA – The Easthampton Fire Department is proud to partner with the Baystate Health Blood Donor Program to host a Blood Drive on 6/29 from 9:30 AM-1:30 PM at the fire station located at 32 Payson Avenue in Easthampton. People are encouraged to call 413-794-4600 to schedule an appointment or just show up that day.
There is currently a blood shortage in Massachusetts. A single donation can save multiple lives. Please partner with us and help us address this gap in life safety across the state!

🚒🐢 Deputy Fire Chief to the Rescue! 🐢🚒

While most calls involve emergencies, today’s mission was a little more… shell-shocking.

Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Benson spotted a turtle, on his way to work this morning in Easthampton near Lovefield Street, attempting to cross the road and decided to lend a hand. After a brief traffic stop and a thorough assessment, the turtle was safely escorted to the other side.

No injuries were reported, although the turtle declined to comment and slowly left the scene.

Just another day of serving the community—one resident at a time, no matter how fast (or slow) they move!

At approximately 12:30 this afternoon Easthampton Public Safety received a call for a structure fire. Easthampton Police and Easthampton Fire responded and arrived to find all four occupants out of this multi-family house and fire was already extending out the second floor windows up into the third floor attic space. Under the command of Captain Dunham, a second alarm was requested bringing in additional resources. The initial Easthampton Fire crews were limited as two firefighters were committed on an emergency ambulance response. Four shift firefighters responded from Easthampton, allowing us to make an interior attack to begin fire suppression operations. As mutual aid crews arrived, they were assigned additional interior tactics. Due to the increasing fire, a third alarm was requested by Chief Norris, bringing in more resources, and all personnel were ordered out of the building. Exterior operations were initiated using aerial master streams from Easthampton, Northampton, Holyoke, and Westfield. Once the fire was darkened down, crews continued interior operations and fully extinguished the fire. There were no injuries at this fire and the American Red Cross is currently working with the occupants to find temporary housing. Mutual aid units that responded included Northampton, Southampton, Holyoke, Westover, Barnes Air National Guard, Westfield, South Hadley District 1, Westhampton, Easthampton CERT, DFS Rehab unit, and Pioneer Valley Ambulance.

Investigation into this fire that was conducted by the Massachusetts State Police, Easthampton Police, and Easthampton Fire found the cause to be an unattended candle. This occupancy did not have residential sprinklers however working smoke detectors alerted all occupants allowing them to safely exit the structure.

I cannot say enough how proud I am of all the emergency responders and the initial Easthampton Dispatch, PD, and FD personnel initiating these operations in challenging conditions. Limited staffing, large two family house, fire self-vented prior to arrival, fire extending into the third floor attic, slate roof, other houses in close proximity creating significant exposure challenges, and the temperatures exacerbating the stress on the firefighters. Saving their remaining property and contents as well as keeping it contained to the one house with those close exposures was arduous.

This event is so unfortunate and please keep these families in your thoughts. I will stop there and post more later this week as this press update is factual, accurate, and will not be construed as leverage for financial decisions the community needs to decide tomorrow during this families loss.

Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic Roseanna Lacas for completing the FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Medical Team Training Course. This course teaches Paramedics and Doctors to treat patients while in different austere environments and specifically collapsed buildings. MA-Task Force 1 instructors and Medical Team members were joined by instructors from New York Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 1 to educate the latest group of Medical Specialists. These students showed a superior level of commitment and energy and a high level of patient care. Our region is now a little better prepared because of all their efforts. We are so proud of Rosie and the skill set she has to help serve the City of Easthampton.
