STEM Students Showcase Creativity in "Stuck at Prom" Challenge

Students in Mrs. Trask's STEM class have spent the last several weeks putting their creativity, engineering skills, and problem-solving abilities to the test while participating in the annual "Stuck at Prom" project.

The challenge required students to design and create complete prom attire using only duct tape. Beginning with original sketches, students carefully planned their designs before constructing their garments entirely from scratch. Throughout the project, students applied measurement, engineering, and critical thinking skills while learning to work with a unique material that offers very little flexibility. One of the biggest challenges students faced was designing wearable clothing while accounting for the fact that duct tape does not stretch.

Students participating in this year's project included Mea Lagasse, Wyatt Manning-Harris, Olivia Bate, Eliza McCurry, Olivia Hopkins, Haydan Keep, Ashton Embelton, Abby Siddiqui, and Jamie McKay. Their hard work, attention to detail, and creativity resulted in an impressive collection of duct tape prom wear that showcased both artistic talent and STEM-based design principles.

To complete the experience, students recruited models for a special fashion show presentation. Models included Colie Devoe, Abbie Hopkins, and Josiah Ellis, who proudly showcased the students' creations on the runway.

The Stuck at Prom project demonstrates how STEM education extends beyond the traditional classroom by combining science, technology, engineering, mathematics, art, and design into a hands-on learning experience. Students gained valuable experience in planning, construction, teamwork, and creative problem-solving while creating memorable and unique pieces of wearable art.

Congratulations to all of the students and models who participated in this exciting and challenging project!

On May 26th, the 6th grade class spent two nights at the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Greenland Point in Princeton. Students participated in hands-on conservation education, practical woods-wise skills and just having outdoor fun. Student activities included canoeing, fishing, hiking, water analysis with microscopes, maps and compasses, arts and crafts, making debris shelters, and fire building.
