The Maryland Defense Force is a volunteer uniformed state military agency and one of the components of the Maryland Military Department (Maryland National Guard; Maryland Defense Force; Maryland Emergency Management Agency). Formally established by the Maryland legislature in 1917, the unit's heritage and traditions trace back to the 17th century. MDDF is one of a number of State Defense Forces au

thorized by the U.S. Congress under Title 32 and the respective state legislatures. While specific missions vary from state to state, the Maryland Defense Force has the primary mission of providing competent and supplemental professional, technical, and military support to the Maryland Army National Guard, the Maryland Air National Guard, and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency. State Defense Forces operate under the command of the Governor, as state Commander-in-Chief, and fall under the operational control of the state Adjutant General. State Defense Forces receive no federal funds and are supported entirely by the state.

Since The Maryland Defense Force Band, the band of the state guard that supports the National Guard, held a separate Drill last week as a rehearsal in preparation for the band’s performance at the governor’s inaugural last Wednesday and was not present for the monthly MDDF Drill this week, yesterday, Major (MD) Rick Barnes served as a one-man military band as an unaccompanied trumpet soloist to provide ceremonial music for a double change of command ceremony at Camp Fretterd, MD.

1. “National Emblem” by E.E. Bagley for the entrance of the reviewing party.

2. One “Ruffle and Flourish” and the “General’s March” in honor of BG (MD) Gregory Juday, the commanding general of the MDDF.

3. Our “National Anthem.”

4. The last strain of “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa for the departure of the reviewing party.

CONGRATULATIONS to LTC (MD) Harold Bailey and LTC (MD) John Green, the incoming and outgoing commanders of the 10th Medical Regiment and LTC (MD) Mark Schroeder and LTC (MD) Fred Sanford, the incoming and outgoing commanders of the 231st Troop Command.
