Kansas drivers: If you have a license plate frame, it's time to check it!
A new Kansas Statue (listed below) bans license plate frames or objects that obstruct the visibility or legibility of your license plate information.
As of July 1, 2026, Kansas law requires your license plate number, state name, expiration month, and registration decal/color to be completely visible and readable. If your frame covers any of that information, you could be in violation.
Law Enforcement is authorized to issue warnings during the initial six-month grace period, giving drivers time to replace or remove non-compliant frames. After that, violations may result in a misdemeanor offense with penalties.

KSA 8-15,110. Covering license plate with plastic-like material. (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to attach and display on any vehicle a license plate, as required under article 1 of chapter 8 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated, which is covered, in whole or in part, with any clear or opaque material or any other plastic-like material that affects the plate's visibility or reflectivity.
(b) This section shall be part of and supplemental to the uniform act regulating traffic on highways.
